PLEASE NOTE: In order to apply to major or minor in Creative Writing you must have completed the
prerequisite course HUMA 2900 Introduction to Creative Writing and be in the process of completing at least
your second year of university study. If you have not completed HUMA 2900, you need to apply to take
HUMA 2900. Applicants can only apply to the major or minor after completion of this course.

Students applying to the major or minor should show strength in two (2) genres and
should submit a portfolio of 15-20 pages (typed and double-spaced) attesting to this
strength (prose fiction fragments will be accepted).
Students who wish to enter any of the Fine Arts workshops in play or screen-writing
should contact those departments directly for requirements (Film & Video, 224 CFT,
(416) 736-5149 ; Theatre, 318 CFT, (416) 736-5172). Students who are denied entry as a
Creative Writing major or minor by the Creative Writing Committee may be allowed into
upper level workshop(s). Such students may re-apply the following spring to the major or
It would be wise, however, during this conditional year, for students to take at least one
of the non-workshop courses required of the major or minor, so that later transfer to
the major will be facilitated. (See the Creative Writing Mini-Calendar or the Division of
Humanities Calendar for the list). Until actual acceptance into the Creative Writing
Programme as majors, Students should choose another major (e.g., English or Humanities)
and apprise themselves of the requirements of that degree programme.
NOTE: No oral or written feedback is available from the Creative Writing
Committee on individual applications and/or portfolios. The decision of the Creative
Writing Committee is final.
