GENERAL INFORMATION FROM 2006/07 STATISTICS

French Immersion Statistics
  - While enrolment in FI grew for the 7th consecutive year, this year’s growth was not as dramatic as in previous
years. The drop has been significant – from 7.01% to 3.95%
  - District with the most growth over a single year – SD 20 Kootenay/Columbia (Castlegar & area) with 23.57%
growth. Enrolment went from 140 to 173. What makes this particularly significant is that the district only
      offers late French immersion.
  - District with second highest growth over a single year – SD83 North Okanagan-Shuswap (Salmon Arm) at
      17.43%. Enrolment went from 304 to 357.
  - Most dramatic growth in a Kindergarten intake was in SD6 – Golden where K enrolment jumped from 22 to
      40 in a single year.
  - Most dramatic growth in Late French Immersion enrolment was in Howe Sound where numbers grew from
      52 to 81.
  - When looking at immersion enrolment in K – Gr 2, there was a slight increase from 11,926 students last year
      to 12,035. This represents a 0.91% increase.
  - Better news is that Grade 8 – 12 students staying in immersion programs crept higher this year over last year.
There were 10,390 this year as opposed to 10,149 last year. This represents an increase of 2.37% over a single
      year.
  - District with the most FI growth over a five year period is SD40 New Westminster with 154.5% growth or
enrolment increasing from 254 to 700 students. This is largely due to the addition of EFI to an already
successful LFI program, plus sustained growth in EFI since its implementation in 2003/04.
  - District with the most significant decline in FI students over one year – SD58 Nicola/Similkameen (Merritt) at
      -9.84% or a drop from 193 students to 174.
  - District with second highest decline in FI Enrolment over the past year – SD73 Kamloops which dropped
      8.27% or from 846 students to 776.
  - Number of districts experiencing a decline in FI enrolment: 11. They include (with loss percentage in
      brackets) :
         o SD6 Golden (6.76)
         o SD33 Chilliwack (1.14)
         o SD34 Abbotsford (3.90)
         o SD52 Prince Rupert (3.18)
         o SD57 Mackenzie (2.51)
         o SD58 Merritt (9.84)
         o SD60 Fort St. John (1.10)
         o SD73 Kamloops (8.27)
         o SD75 Mission (0.45)
         o SD79 Cowichan Valley (4.15)
         o SD82 Kitimat, Terrace, Hazelton (3.12)

Core French Statistics
  - 44 districts saw a decline in Core French enrolment, 14 saw an increase and one remained unchanged.
  - The most significant Core French enrolment drop was in SD87 where numbers plummeted by 60.94% or from
      64 to 25.
  - The second most significant drop took place in SD10 where numbers dropped 55.93% from 177 to 78.
  - The most significant gain in Core French enrolment took place in SD50 where enrolment jumped from 107 to
      174 or by 62.62%.
  - Second highest growth in Core French took place in SD20 where numbers grew by 32.60% from 2,224 to 2,949
      students.
  - In September 2005, the Yukon Department of Education introduced an Intensive Core French program for
Grade 5 students at Holy Family Elementary School.
  - Also in the Yukon, Vanier Catholic Secondary School will continue to offer Social Studies Extensive French.
This course allows students to study Social Studies in French, with the rest of their coursework taking place in
      English.
  - According to Ministry of Education statistics, districts offering Core French from K are SD6, 8, 10, 19, 20, 39,
      42, 51, 53, 59, 61, 62, 63, 64, 70, 79, 84, 85 and 91. (Who knew!!?)

Programme Francophone

  - The francophone program continues to grow steadily. Last year it grew from 3,632 students to 3,816 or by
      5.07%.
  - There are 38 schools in SD93, the Conseil Scolaire Francophone. Vancouver will soon have the province’s first
      francophone secondary school.

General Statistics

  - Although the growth in French immersion was less dramatic this year, when the overall drop in enrolment is
considered, French immersion is still growing in proportion to total enrolment.
- In the past year there were no new immersion programs added in BC, meaning that there are currently 45 EFI
programs, 26 LFI programs and one Intensive Core program (plus one Intensive French and one extended
    French in the Yukon).
- There are 44 districts offering either early, late or both immersion programs. Yukon offers both early and
    late immersion.
- The Yukon offers a variety of adult French courses during the fall and winter semesters. Courses are offered
at all levels, from beginner to advanced. The two-hour classes are offered once a week for 12 weeks, from
    mid-September to mid-December, and again from mid-January to mid-April.
