Sacred Trinity - Part Two
Staying Present
Have you ever heard the old saying: The past is past; the future is unknown but the
present is a gift to enjoy now? Well, this newsletter is going to give you some ideas on
how you can shower yourself with gifts. OK, no more lame puns, I'm going to give you a
bunch of ideas that you can pick and choose from. Take the ones that resonate with you
and incorporate them into your life. I'll go into detail about the first few, just to get you
thinking about how these exercises can bring you to the present moment, and maybe that
will help you to find things in your own daily life that bring you into the NOW.
Here's your first idea, laugh more! When you laugh, you are not caught up in the past or
worrying about the future. Read funny books, watch sitcoms, hang out with friends, try
laughter yoga or just treat yourself to a laughter exercise. You can do this with a friend
or on your own, but give it a try. Warning, you might feel silly and fake at first, but if
you stay with it long enough, (5-10 minutes) you'll start to feel the benefits. The
exercise is simple-just start laughing! Change the type of laugh around: giggle, guffaw,
snort, belly laugh, Santa laugh, etc. Like I said, it may seem silly at first, but the benefits
will begin to win out. And when you try it with a friend, partner, or group, then you start
to set each other off.
Exercise. Not only is it good for you physically, but it can also help bring you into the
NOW. Many runners talk about getting a 'runner's high', where they get moments of
clarity. The same can be said for other forms of exercise. The key is to find something
you like. Finding an activity that appeals to you is important. So something like yoga or
dance classes can help enormously. Please remember there are several different types of
yoga and dance classes - take a look at your personality and find the one that works for
you, just remember that there is a bit of a learning curve for any of these activities and
you are not suppose to be able to do them as well as the instructor, especially in the first
few weeks. Show yourself some love and respect where you are physically. But the gift
of being in the present, can still be with you as you are learning, because usually when
you are learning something new, it takes all your concentration - you are in the NOW -
not thinking about what you are going to have for lunch tomorrow or something that you
said to a co-worker the day before!
And now, before I go on, a shameless plug - if you would like to try something new, I am
hosting fundraising sample belly dance classes on December 13th, 16th & 18th. All the
donations go to the Weekend to End Breast Cancer. I am also hosting Full Moon
Meditation on Thursday, December 11, 2008. Which brings me to my next suggestion.
Meditation and breathing. Just stop! Meditation can be intimidating for many. But there
are several different forms of meditation and you can find a course, or CD or book to help
you learn a type of meditation that works for you. The basis of most meditation practices
is breathing. Most people don't breath properly and let their lungs do all the work.
Breath work should use your diaphragm, which makes it seem as if your breathing is
coming from your belly. Just give it a try, fill up your belly for a steady count of three,
hold it for three and then exhale for a steady count of three. While doing this,
acknowledge any thoughts you have and just push them to the side and continue to focus
on your breathing. Try this for five minutes a day - set an alarm or stopwatch so you
won't be pre-occupied with time! It will help you to connect with the here and now, will
calm you down and will help you to be a little less stressed. Just a little warning, at first
it might make you feel light-headed, this will pass with practice.
Those are three easy things that you can incorporate in your life to help build up the
present and balance out your own Sacred Trinity. Here is a list of other activities that you
may be more in alignment with, or can inspire you to think of your own.
