Minutes of the November 17, 2008 Meeting

1. Meeting called to order at 8:05 pm
2. Prayer and Intentions led by Carl followed by Introductions
3. Approval of Agenda: Motion by Jaymie, 2nd by Jodi
4. Minutes of Oct 20th not available – tabled to December meeting.
5. Old Business:
a) Craft Sale: 38 tables are registered and paid (3 others booked but not paid)
b) Directory: suggestions for next year: include classroom direct phone line and/or
c) Movie Night:
Movie was Kung-Fu Panda
profit about $420
Sidney M won the 50/50, Jeff S. won the movie
THANKS to Scott Parker who provided the screen and projector for the
movie – it provided a much better picture – he has offered to do again

d) Schools Win Twice Raffle Tickets: final sales were $5675, of which we get ½
back (paid for a few books that were not returned, but fewer than in other

f) School Photos – we will be trying a different company for 2009/2010 – have a
date booked with Life Touch/Jostens Photography. Nona to contact Academy
that we will not be booking with them in September.
6. Executive Reports:
a) Co Chairs – Thank you to Crystal Hendriks who has agreed to fill the vacant
Executive Position and for offering to look after the Campbell’s “Labels for

7. Liaison Reports:
a) Parish: Brandon (youth coordinator at Holy Family) is not available for Monday
meetings but we will keep him up-to-date on our activities and encourage him to
keep in touch with us
b) Community Association: meeting tomorrow night at 7:00 pm at Mother Teresa
c) Preschool: 5 openings left in the afternoon sessions for 4 year-olds, registrations
accepted throughout the year
8. New Business:
a) Pre-Christmas we would like to do another fundraiser. Sobey’s gift cards are
being done by Holy Spirit, St. Joe’s band and Mother Teresa Preschool either
ongoing or at different times throughout the year. Co-op cards offer maximum

Fundraiser before Christmas. Passed.
Melanie has offered to coordinate, Jaymie will assist.
b) Christmas Spirit
purchased a new tree ($250) and looking at faith/hope ornaments.
Would like a new silver angel – anyone finding one at a store is
welcome to purchase and they will be reimbursed
Staff have not confirmed school-wide service activity – possibly will do
Christmas hampers with Holy Family Church again
Christmas Spirit Committee will host a Tea Room during the Christmas
c) Campbell’s Labels
We have over 25,000 points
Have requested a new catalogue
MOTION: (Nona, 2nd Pamela) That Council purchases 4 sets of Lego
(currently on sale at Wal-Mart). Passed.
We were not able to use points in 2007/2008 for Lego – points carried
forward. Once catalogue arrives we can purchase additional Lego or
Melanie offered to pick up the Lego.
Suggestions for speakers for future meetings:
1. Tennis Canada (Rufus Nel) – new program being introduced in
Phys. Ed (our school has had an in-service already.
2. Constable Dean Gulka (police liaison)– internet safety
3. Carl Melnyk – Bullying Awareness along with Safe Positive School
4. Smart Board presentation
5. Lori Anne Gabruch – presentation to parents similar to what she
has provided students on the Byzantine Rite
9. School Administrators Report:
a) Carl reviewed important upcoming dates (refer school newsletter)
b) Staff Changes:
Jeremy Deck taking a parental leave Jan-June
Marg Polanik taking a medical leave Nov – Feb
Lisa Meier taking a maternity leave in Jan
c) Learning Improvement Plan
Reviewed Smart Goals which have been divided into 3 separate groups
d) French Survey:
Results were sent into Board of Education and they have requested
specific information regarding surveys from Grade 5 parents (pilot
would be Grade 6 class in 2009 if approved) – 21 in favor, 23 not in
favor, 6 undecided, 2 have not replied
Overall from Preschool to Grade 5, 65% of respondents in favor (145
of 205 returned)
Final decision has not been made on introducing the Intensive French
Program to Mother Teresa School
e) School Clothing
Nov 20th is deadline for orders
Gr 5 – 7 urged to order shirts as they are used for track/cross
f) Student Leadership:
ASAP (Always Say a Prayer) current initiative
Orange and Apple Drive under way
g) Staff professional development ongoing
h) Grant Application has gone into Catholic Schools Foundation requesting funding
to support student transportation to Mass at St. George’s and for Grade 8 retreat
(Living the Gospel Values)
i) Annual Meeting of Electors – 7pm at St. Joseph’s on Monday Nov 24th – would
like a Council Rep(s) – Nona and Melanie both unavailable.
10. Other Business:
a) December Social and meeting – not in planner, will stick with 3rd Monday
(December 15th) at 8:00 pm. Will have hors d’ouevres.
b) Outstanding Wish List Items:
MOTION: (Patty, 2nd Simone) That Council provides $200 for computer
software for the Smart Boards. Passed.
MOTION: (Patty, 2nd Jodi): That Council provides $500 to support
school patrols. Passed.
MOTION: (Simone, 2nd Crystal): That Council provide up to $250 for
Christmas Costumes. Passed.
c) Thank you to Rufus Nel for providing the green turtle for the patrols.
