THE JEELY PIECE CLUB, CASTLEMILK Information for Applicants, August 2005 Background The Jeely Piece Club was established in Castlemilk in 1975 by local parents, to improve opportunities for their children. It has been recognised as one of the most successful community organisations in Scotland. It has developed a range of innovative, high quality services for children & families, delivered with professionalism and efficiency by well-trained and motivated staff, while retaining maximum community involvement. We aim to bring all age groups in the community together to: Improve opportunities for children. Provide high quality services that support children and families and enable them to develop their full potential. Work in collaboration with key partners. Facilities The organisation has recently acquired new premises for both pre-5s and 5-12s. Our pre-5 services are based in The Jeely Nursery, in a specially adapted wing of Castlemilk Community Centre, providing attractive facilities in a prime location next to Castlemilk Shopping Centre. The Nursery offers: Parent & Toddler groups led by trained staff, delivering the 3-5 curriculum and learning through play for under 3s Respite Daycare for pre-5s whose families are in crisis Creches Parents’ Programme with a wide range of activities and personal development opportunities for adults Parenting Classes Our 5-12 services are based in the Jeely Playzone, a purpose built play facility 10 minutes walk from theNursery. The Playzone offers: An attractive café with soft play area ‘Cyber Space’ computer suite Arts and crafts room Megaspace games hall Excellent outdoor play facilities. Indoor and outdoor play sessions year round for 0-12s Volunteer placements with training and support A range of learning opportunities for adults and children. .The Jeely Piece Club is an approved Centre for the delivery of SVQ’s in Playwork and in Early Years Care & Education and has recently become an accredited Learn Direct Centre. Governance The organisation is a Company Limited by Guarantee and is managed by a Board of Directors, either elected from the local community or co-opted because of special skills and experience. Partnership Working The Jeely works in partnership with a range of agencies, with whom it is fully involved in joint working to tackle issues of poverty and deprivation in the area. At present it is funded by: Glasgow City Council - Cultural & Leisure Services - Social Work Services - Education Services, through the Sure Start Programme and the Childcare Strategy Fund Better Neighbourhood Services Fund Glasgow NHS Board Castlemilk Social Inclusion Partnership. Together with a Council nursery, it is part of Castlemilk Family Learning Centre and is co- located with the Social Work Family Resource Team, to offer integrated support to Pre-5’s and their families.
