UKLA Student Research Award
The UKLA Student Research Award is awarded annually. The award is given for an
outstanding student dissertation at under-graduate, post-graduate or higher degree level
undertaken at a UK institution. Studies using any research approach (ethnographic,
experimental, historical, etc.) are encouraged. Each study is assessed in the light of the
chosen approach, the scholarly quality of its report, and its contribution to the field of
literacy.

Criteria for Consideration for the Award
The nominee for the award must be a UKLA member.
The dissertation must be solely student-authored.
The research must have been conducted, at least in part, after August 1, 2007.
The application for the award (obtain this from the committee chair or the website) must be
accompanied by a sponsorship form (included with Award application materials) which outlines
the support of the student's own institution. This would normally be the dissertation
supervisor.

Application materials, including the application form signed by the supervising tutor or a
relevant member of department, a cover sheet, and an abstract of the dissertation, must be
received by November 10, 2008 by the UKLA Research Convenor:
Guy Merchant
Faculty of Development and Society,

Applications will be assessed by the UKLA sub-committee and a short- list will be drawn up.
The complete works short-listed will then be requested as electronic Microsoft Word files.
The successful applicant will be selected on November 16 at a meeting of the UKLA Research
Sub-committee. Review categories include:
     Significance
     Rationale
     Methodology or theoretical soundness

     Contribution to the field
Applicants will be notified of results by the end of December, 2008. The award will be
presented at the International Conference in July, 2009 at which the applicant will present
the results of the study. UKLA will fund Saturday registration, travel and attendance at the
Conference dinner for the successful applicant.
