                                           3
Operating the Slab Gel Dryer

A. Safety Considerations
 A 6.3 Amp input fuse is located on the side panel.
 A 13 Amp mains fuse is fitted to the power lead.

To replace a fuse isolate the control unit from the mains supply and open the fuse holder with a
screwdriver blade. The holder contains two fuses. The loose fuse is a spare. Always use the
recommended fuse and NEVER replace it with one of a different rating.

B. General Care and Maintenance
 The unit can be cleaned as required when the mains supply is isolated.
 Cleaning should be carried out with a cloth moistened with water or tissues impregnated
with 70% iso-propyl alcohol. NO OTHER CLEANING SOLUTIONS SHOULD BE USED.

There are no internal operator serviceable parts in this unit. If the power should fail, the unit
must be returned to the authorised service center.

C: Operation
To dry slab gels the procedure detailed below should be followed.

1. Vacuum System
 The vacuum pump employed must be capable of pulling an air volume of between 1.5
and 6m3/hour. Check the manufacturers details of the vacuum pump to see if it is
resistant to chemicals and contains separators. If so, no chemical vapor trap or cold trap
are required to remove any fumes from entering the pump. If the pump is not resistant to
chemicals then a vapor trap and cold trap should be fitted. It is always advisable to
incorporate a cold trap, what ever type of vacuum pump is used.
 Connect the vacuum pump to the vacuum connector, using strengthen vacuum tubing.
 Connect the vacuum pump to the mains inlet, if the vacuum timer is required.
 Connect the mains lead to the mains input socket.

2. Preparation of the Drying Plate
 Rinse the aluminium platen and stainless steel screen with distilled water only. Dry with
clean paper towels. DO NOT use abrasives or solvents.
 NOTE: Radioactive material can accumulate on the platen and stainless steel screen.
Clean these periodically with strong detergents to remove this material, rinse well with
distilled water and dry with clean paper towels.
 It is important to follow all the required radiation safety procedures.

3. Preparation for Drying Gels.
 Place the stainless steel screen into the top of the aluminium platen.
 Cut a piece of 3mm filter paper to cover the stainless steel screen.
 Cut a piece of 3mm filter paper, just larger than the gel to be dried, and place it onto the
filter paper on the stainless steel screen.
 Place the gel onto the filter paper, preventing air bubbles.
 Cover the gel with Saran wrap, preventing air bubbles.
 Place the Mylar sheet on top of the sandwich when drying gels of less than 1.5mm thick.
If the gel is more than 1.5mm thick cover the sandwich with the porous polyethylene
      sheet.
 Cover the sandwich with the clear silicone rubber overlay sheet.
                                                   4
4. Drying the Gel.
 Turn on the mains power.
 Turn on the vacuum pump and the vacuum pump timer to the required time.
 A seal should be created between the rubber overlay and the plate.
 Set the required temperature using the digital display panel.
 Press the ‘SET’ button, the previous temperature stored in the memory will be displayed.
NOTE: The temperature is initially set up at 80oC.
 Adjust the required temperature by pressing the Temperature ‘UP’ and ‘DOWN’ buttons.
 Press the ‘SET’ button and the new temperature will be stored in the memory.
 After a few seconds the temperature display will return to the actual temperature.
 The ‘Heating Element On’ light will illuminate when the heating element is on.
 Set the ‘Heating Element Timer’ to the required time.
 A standard sequencing gel will dry in approximately 40 minutes at 80oC.

NOTE: The Hysteresis control is preset. It is NOT necessary for the user to use this function.

5. After Drying.
 To remove the gel after drying is completed.
    Turn off Vacuum pump.
 Turn off Vacuum pump timer.
 Turn off Heating element timer.
 Remove the silicone rubber overlay, this will break the vacuum.
 Remove the stacking layers to reach the dried gel.

D. Troubleshooting:

Condition Probable Cause Remedy
No power The mains fuse has blown. See warning Below
No heat The heating element fuse See warning Below
                    has blown.
No vacuum Check the vacuum input fuse See warning Below
                    and vacuum pump fuses.
Gels crack Gels too thick or concentrated. Try to use thinner gels.
                                                      Decrease the drying
                                                      temperature and the
                                                      drying time.
