A Brief Introduction to Northgate High School for Potential Applicants

Dereham is a thriving market town set in the beautiful Norfolk countryside, fifteen
miles west of Norwich and within easy reach of King’s Lynn, the Norfolk Broads and
the North Norfolk Coast. There are extensive house building programmes in and
around the Dereham area.

There are two fully comprehensive 11-18 High Schools in Dereham. The two schools
jointly manage the Dereham Sixth Form College situated mid-way between them,
with half the teaching carried out by Northgate staff. The College is very successful
with large numbers of students moving to Higher Education, including Oxbridge.
The current main school role is 915 with an additional 340 in the 6th form; most staff
teach their subject to A level.

The school is situated on the northern approach to the town with modern well-
equipped buildings set in excellent playing fields.

New building programmes have provided:

 Two new science laboratories and refurbishment of others, producing a suite of
seven laboratories offering the highest quality accommodation.
 An English block comprising library, drama studio, three English classrooms and
 A two storey classroom block including media and performing arts facilities
 A block comprising Careers room, two RE classrooms, ICT/Music Technology
    rooms, offices and toilets
 A new main entrance/exhibition centre
 A suite of changing rooms and an all weather floodlit pitch

Northgate High School has a reputation for high academic standards; raising
achievement is high on our agenda. The high standard of pupil discipline and
behaviour is largely attributable to the positive ethos, which stems from our focus on
praise, reward and the celebration of achievement.

The school is organised on a Year basis. There is a fixed Head of Year 7 who
organises pupil transfer from the feeder schools. Heads of Years 8 to 11 move through
the school with the year group, along with the tutor teams. We have a policy of setting
wherever timetable flexibility allows. Pupils are placed in Houses for competition

Northgate High School is a thriving community. We have an extensive network of
links with schools in Europe. These links go far beyond the traditional pupil
exchanges and include European Arts Festivals in Dereham, Amsterdam and
Dortmund. The concert band tours regularly, both locally and farther afield. There is
every opportunity for new staff to become involved in these initiatives.

Sport is a strength of the school; we currently hold the Sportsmark Gold Award and
the FA Charter Mark.
In 1998 we were the first school in East Anglia to become an ‘Eco School’. We were
fortunate in having Professor David Bellamy to open our new buildings and celebrate
the award with us. In 2005 we received the Eco Award for the fourth time and now
hold the award outright without the need to submit a further application.

In 2001, along with the Schools Achievement Award, we achieved Investors in People
Status and the Silver Artsmark which has since been twice re-awarded.

Our last Ofsted Inspection, September 2006, was extremely positive. Achievement
and Standards; Teaching and Learning; Curriculum; Care, Guidance and Support;
Leadership and Management were all described as Good. Personal Development and
Well Being was judged to be Outstanding. The Ofsted team described pupil behaviour
as excellent praising the superb ethos and the commitment of staff.

In September 2004 we became a Specialist Arts and Humanities College, the only one
of its type in the country, with a focus on English, Art & Design and Drama. This has
given a further boost to the school providing benefits across the whole curriculum and
for the wider community.

As a result of our 2005 and 2006 GCSE results we were enrolled as a member of the
Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT) ‘Most Improved Schools Club’.

Northgate High School is an excellent, forward-looking school. We believe in
traditional values and standards in both academic work and personal development. We
work closely with parents in developing caring, friendly relationships with pupils.

Everything we do at Northgate stems from the school aims:
Northgate High School aims to be an excellent school where young people enjoy
learning, achieve highly and enter the adult world with confidence.
