Introduction to Pharmacology (30:718:320) Fall 2007 First Term, Year Three
Tuesday and Thursday 5.00 – 6.20 PM
Course Director: M. Iba Co-Director: R. Snyder
ARC 103
Goals and Objectives: The purpose of this course is to provide the learner with a basic understanding of pharmacology: the effects of drugs on living systems. Emphasis will be on the mechanism of action of drugs, and on mechanisms associated with the absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME) of drugs. Upon completion of this course, the learner should be able to: 1) Understand the basis for dose-response relationships; 2) Define potency, efficacy, agonist and antagonists; 3) Have a working knowledge of receptors and mechanisms associated with modulation of intracellular events following drug-receptor interactions; 4) Know fundamental aspects of the physiology and function of organs influencing ADME and drug action in the body; 5) Appreciate the impact of ADME processes on the efficacy and adverse effects of drugs.
