Introduction to Coordinate Geometry Applied Math 20S A. Objectives Cognitive Domain: The student will learn (review) that points on a coordinate grid (Cartesian plane) are identified by their x and y values. Psychomotor Domain: The student will demonstrate a basic knowledge of points on a coordinate grid by plotting them, identifying points, playing battleship and working on an assignment. Affective Domain: The student will value the skill/ability of being able to identify points on a coordinate grid. B. Introduction (2-3 min.) Topic: Intro to Coordinate Geometry (should be review) Statement: “Today we're going to start a new unit on line segments. However, before that I thought that we should get to know each other a little better…” C. Body (85 min.) 1. Mental Math (10 min.) 2. Introductions (15 min.) -have students write in their journals -they can ask me questions -discussion about respecting each other 3. Play Battleship (20 min.) -using the graphing calculators -subs are below the x-axis; planes are above the y-axis (have to have 2 or 3 of each) -students need to say the point (ex. 2,3) and keep track of the ones they have called 4. Notes/Examples (20 min.) -see attached page of notes and examples 5. Assign and worktime (rest of the class) -assignment #1 in the booklet # 1-12 D. Conclusion (1-2 min.) Summary: “So today we had a quick review of the coordinate plane, plotting points and finding the area of figures. Tomorrow we'll start in on some new material about the distance between two points. Don't forget to finish up your assignment #1.” Assignment: #1 from the booklet
Evaluation Student: Did the students show an understanding of the material? How did the students react to someone new? Was their confusion about which number comes first, the x or the y? Did the students enjoy playing battleship and was it a good activity to refresh their memories? Teacher: Did I show an understanding of the material? Was I clear and consice in my explanations? Did I interact well with the students? E. Teaching Aids -overhead and overhead pens -graphing calculators -assignment booklet -notes/example page F. Timing Included within the introduction, body and conclusion.
