Introduction to The Enochian Primer By Frater Serpentis Satori 9=2 22 oct 03ve: Sun in ; Moon in
Enochian Magick, more than any other form within The Western Tradition has obsessed, confounded, and tormented many of both the best and worst Hermetic Minds. The system’s complexity, even when removed from its halfsibling Heptarcia is astoundingly vast. Information on the Elemental Tablets alone consumes most of the current books on the topic and nearly a hundred pages total between the Golden Dawn and Aurum Solis versions. 1 The Holy Table, Tablet of Nalvage, and Sigilum de Aemeth further complicate this subject; much less Crowley’s Work on the topic and attempts to “reconstruct” Dr. John Dee’s original methods. The fact that the Keys or Calls given to Dee are in another language entirely, has led to speculation about “The Tongue of Angles” as anything from hoax, to cipher, to functional magickal language. I assume the latter here, with full awareness of the limitations of attempting to reconstruct a language from a few hundred words. Hopefully, this Project will inspire others to record, channel and further increase our store of both texts and vocabulary of this important tongue. This idea and text is by no means original, many have attempted this in print in very limited ways including : Donald Tyson, Lon Milo Duquette but more importantly Hulse and Laycock, without them this would have been

much more time consuming and difficult. I do not whole heartly agree with either of them, on several points of Enochian Theory or Linguistics, but their contributions were invaluable to this effort. This Project had been discussed several years ago when I was running the GD Enochian List. Callisto Radiant (who still calls his site Enochian Linguistics) initially this idea but both Ben Rowe and myself saw the importance of this. The stars were wrong, and other things prevented any work on this at all for nearly four years. Today with this introduction and the first installment of the Primer I open up this topic and field for a fresh review. I envision a handful of installments each to be added seasonally for several quarters. Future researchers will hopefully be able to expand these findings as well as the broader range of Enochian.
The Basis of Language
My Enochian Primer is based on the assertion that Enochian is a regular language, with common verb, noun and adverb forms. My treatment of it is similar to other Sacred Tongues, namely Latin, Hieroglyphic, Hebrew and Sanskrit. This appears to be true in any case, by the forms of both “I” and “Be”. Since there is such a limited vocabulary available at this time, I am assuming there is a single verb case, and that nouns are not gendered. These may be incorrect, but as yet I see no evidence to the contrary. These and many other linguistic questions should be the basis of the ongoing discussion of these matters.
