“Moy Monkey’s Lessons For Life” ~ Notes and Answers to Some Frequently Asked Questions The Moy Monkey‟s Lessons for life was originally a pilot album covering a wide age group – from those preparing for primary to school to those already in primary school. It stands to reason that this will be different in each country or even each area within a country. It was meant to be followed by albums specific to each age range. As such not ALL songs would suit a particular age. For instance, it‟s unlikely that a child learning their alphabet would also learn how to cross the road. But a teacher in a primary school would be teaching many children of different ages and so could use one or two songs with each age group. However, none of the songs are meant to be sole educators. They are meant to assist a teacher or minder as they discuss topics that can help the child. Music is great for lifting an interest in topics. It can also assist as a memory aid. But the teaching is down to the teacher. It‟s up to you to use or not use certain songs. In my experience with my own children, I have found that regardless of their age, each song offers an opportunity to talk about certain things. For instance even a child who knows their alphabet can enter into a discussion as to where Oman is – perhaps pointing it out on the globe. Likewise even a child that cannot read can be helped to see the benefits of learning to do so. And even if a topic is beyond a child‟s years, that same topic will have a ring of familiarity later when they come to learn it because they have played the song so often – “That‟s Fractions” is a prime example there. Also; pointed questions can lead to great discussions. For instance when playing the “Holding me Tight” song, after pointing out that the girl singing was talking about how her mum really loved her and held her tight, you could ask; “What kind of things do your mum and dad do to make you comfortable at home?” and “What might you do to show your mum and dad you really appreciate what they do for you?” also “What song do you like to listen to before going to sleep?” So the songs are a vehicle for discussion. A good teacher will prepare what to discuss and how best to use the songs. Frequently asked questions; Q. Why use a monkey and why the funny voice? A. Children love animals and something with a funny voice seems to hold their attention far more than an adult trying to „teach‟ them. So the children end up learning because of their own intrigue. Having the monkey „talk‟ in between the songs keeps the children listening for the whole album. It only seemed appropriate that the monkey should sing one or two of the songs himself. Q. Will there be any more in the Moy Monkey series? A. Well, I had originally planned many songs for each age group and I have some songs already written. But it all depends on available time and what interest there is – so the more people contact me the more likely there will be another album. Q. What happens if the children raise questions I can‟t answer? A. Well, children are inquisitive and that is their main fuel for learning. The most important thing is not to squash that legitimate thirst. Even if you feel the topic is beyond their years it‟s best to attempt an explanation and then say they will understand more as they grow. Q. Is there an activity book for the album? A. I hope to be able to make a downloadable activity book or at least a leaflet offering suggestions for each song. In the meantime – you are only limited by your imagination as to what you can do to stimulate thought with fun. If an activity leaflet is available it should be at this link; www.Micah45.com/LFL.doc
