TECH 660-Design for Engineering Unit 1: Introduction to the Engineering Profession “Investigating College Engineering Programs” (Worksheet) = Name: _________________ Date: ________ Introduction: Where do I go? What do I do? How much does it cost? These are just a few questions that potential students have when they are investigating a college career in engineering. You will be doing some research on the internet to find some answers to these questions. Directions/Web Quest: Choose and research two different universities in the United States that have engineering programs in the field that you interested in (10 major branches of engineering listed in the reading assignment). Put the information for the following questions into a typed document to be handed in. Make sure and list your sources where you found information. Listed are some web sites that will help you in your search: www.asee.org- National Society for Engineering Education www.nae.edu- National Academy of Engineering www.jets.org- Occupational Outlook Handbook Questions to be answered: (Points possible are in parenthesis behind each question. There are a total of 60 points possible to receive. 1. What are the names of the two universities? (2) 1 What is the name of the degree program of study? (1) 2. How many semester hours are dedicated to general education courses? (3) (Note: 2 semester hours = 3 quarter hours) 3. List any course requirements that relate to engineering (Example: Technology and Society, Engineering Ethics, etc.). Provide the title of the course and the number of credits. (5) 4. How many semester credits of mathematics are required? (2) 5. How many semester credits of science are required? (2) 6. How many credits are required within the engineering specialty? (2) 7. What other requirements are there for graduation? (Example: Internships, foreign language, etc.) (5) 8. How many semester hours are required to graduate with a baccalaureate degree? (3) 9. Assuming one has all required high school courses, can this degree be completed in four years? Why or why not? (Normally 16 credits per semester is considered a full load x 8 semester = 128 credits.) (5) 10. What were some of the unique elements that you find interesting or unusual? (8) 11. Did you find any differences between engineering and engineering technology programs? (8) 12. Summarize your findings in a narrative of one to three paragraphs.
