Introduction to Computer Hardware Lesson Objectives 1. IT-B.1.6 1. Demonstrate how a computer system operates. IT.1.6.2 - Use computer terminology (cpu, mouse, etc) IT.1.6.3 - Use various parts of a computer system (disk drives, keyboards, etc.) IT.1.6.6 - Explain the relationship between hardware and software. 2. The student shall be versed in: a. Starting up and shutting down a computer properly. b. Logging onto a network and properly logging off the network. c. Properly shutting down a computer. Maine Learning Results Science and Technology, L.5 – Access information at remote sites using telecommunications. Lesson 1. Discuss the major concepts related to electricity: a. definition – the flow of electrons from one molecule of a substance to another. - in order for electricity to flow a substance or element must contain free electrons example – the metals...copper, iron, zinc. 2. Discuss the major concepts related to conductance: a. definition – any material that easily conducts electricity. example – the metals...copper, iron, zinc. 3. Compare analog and digital signals: a. analog signals – continuous signals, which change value over time – sound, radio signals....a dimmer light switch. b. Digital signals – most if not all computer data and information – a regular light switch – either on or off – just two states. 4. Supply students with methodology for logging onto the network a. user name b. password c. domain – SAD16 Have students log onto the network if available and go to the below URL. 5. Components of a Computer Using the website http://computer.howstuffworks.com/pc.htm or the handout along with the PC Architecture handout, have students draw and label one of the available PCs to include a few words about the function of the device to include: Motherboard Central Processing Unit (CPU) Random Access Memory (RAM) Power Supply Hard Disk or Hard Drive Removable Storage – floppy drive, CDROM drive Network connection device – modem, Local Area Network Card (LAN card) 6. Instruct and guide the students on how to properly log off of the network or how to properly shutdown the PC. Discuss security and operational concerns of improper PC shutdown. 6. Review Items electricity conductor analog vs. digital major components of a computer logging on and off of the network, starting and shutting down the computer Student Name__________________ Activity Sheet – Introduction to Computer Hardware 1. If the network is available, log onto the SAD16 network. 2. Open the Internet Explorer Web Browsing application. 3. Navigate to the following web site. Using the website http://computer.howstuffworks.com/pc.htm or the handout along with the PC Architecture handout, draw and label one of the available PCs to include a few words about the function of the following devices to include: Motherboard Central Processing Unit (CPU) Random Access Memory (RAM) Power Supply Hard Disk or Hard Drive Removable Storage – floppy drive, CDROM drive Network connection device – modem, Local Area Network Card (LAN card) 4. At the direction of the instructor, log off of the SAD16 network or shutdown the computer using the shutdown command in the start button (lower left of screen).
