							                 Introduction To Travel Hockey
                       2007-2008

        Welcome to the FREDERICK FURY!!!
If you are new to travel hockey, or to the Fury Club, this document should
provide you with basic information about youth hockey and our program. If you
are a returning parent or player, WELCOME BACK! We think this booklet
should serve as a refresher and helpful reference document.

Travel hockey provides a wonderful opportunity for youth to experience the
excitement and accomplishment of sport through competition. Players gain first
hand experiences that will service them throughout their lives. They accomplish
goals with other teammates. They experience personal learning and the
satisfaction of personal development. Without realizing it, they learn problem-
solving, strategic thinking and how to analyze and deal with complex situations.
The intensity forged by competition offers lessons that simply aren’t possible in
many other settings. Additionally, lifelong friendships are formed among players
and families. That’s why in the ninth-year history of the program, we have
observed that players and parents rarely leave travel hockey once they have
joined.

All this requires a significant commitment. Fury teams average between 30 and
40 games per season, spanning September to March. This includes pre-season
games, league and non-league games, tournaments, and playoffs. In addition to
games, teams practice twice a week at the Skate Frederick Rink. While Frederick
offers the best hockey value in the region, travel hockey also is an expensive
undertaking. We want to provide you with a ride range of information and have
prepared this booklet to help you make an informed choice about joining the
club. For more information you may contact Brian Schulz, Fury Hockey Director,
301-865-8904, brian.schulz@adelphia.net or you may visit our website at

LEAGUE & TEAMS
League The Fury competes in the Capital Beltway Hockey League
www.cbhl.org (CBHL). The league includes 21 Tier II clubs
from Virginia and Maryland, ranging in geography from
Baltimore to the north and Hampton Roads to the South.

Age Groups The Fury typically fields teams in all six age divisions of
               Youth ice hockey:

               Mite (born 1999 & 2000)
               Squirt (born 1997 & 1998)
               Pee Wee (born 1996 & 1995)
               Bantam (born 1993 & 1994)

Levels AA is highest level of Tier II play, and a very demanding
level for players who combine high level of experience, skills
               and knowledge of the game.

A is the second level of play offered by the club. It is highly
Competitive, usually the division with the highest number of
               Teams in the CBHL.

B is the third designated level of play. Also highly
competitive, usually for players just starting in travel
hockey or players who still have various aspects of their skills
               to develop.

TRYOUTS & FEES
Now that you know about our team structure, you might be interested in information
about try-outs.

Travel teams are selected through tryouts. Team rosters typically include 14 players’ and
one or two goalies. ALL players interested in playing for the Fury need to participate in
tryouts (i.e. there are no held spots). The club Hockey Director and team coaches make
evaluation of players during tryouts. After the last tryout session at each level, roster
spots will be offered to selected players. Tryouts require pre-registration and a fee. You
may pre-register by April 16, 2007 and pay $75.00, if you register after this date you
pay $95.00.

An updated list of try-out dates can be found on our website at:
                          www.frederickfury.com

               MITE SQUIRT PEEWEE BANTAM MIDGET
SKATER $1475.00 $1775.00 $2025.00 $2025.00 $2200.00

ALSO INCLUDED IN THE ABOVE FEES IS ALL CLUB FUNDRASING. Upon payment
of the above fees, no added fundraising will be required. However, for those interested
in participating in fundraising as a means to lower the fee amount, the Fury will offer
fundraising to individuals who may choose to participate…..details to follow. Also, the
Fury will offer assistance and work with any families (on a confidential basis) unable to
adhere to the payment structure as defined below.

Excluded from the above fees are all remaining costs of travel hockey
including tournament fees, equipment, uniforms, travel costs, etc.

The following payment structure will be required for the 2007-2008 FYHA fees: The
first non-refundable payment of $400.00 is due by May 15, 2007 (collected at tryouts),
or your roster spot is forfeited. The next $400.00 payment is due by June 30, 2007;
another $400.00 is due by July 30, 2007; final payment of the balance is due by Fury
Day. Once a roster spot is forfeited due to non-payment, the player must attend a
supplemental tryout. FYHA will honor pre-arranged payment plans. All fees are
non-refundable.

NOTE: ANY TIME THIS PAYMENT PLAN IS NOT ADHERED TO, WE WILL NEED TO REMOVE A
PLAYER FROM THE TEAM ROSTER AND NOT PERMIT THE PLAYER TO PRACTICE OR PLAY.

and waterproof shell pants.

Equipment varies in price depending upon player’s position, equipment quality
and equipment condition. Prices range from several hundred dollars to several
thousand dollars. Equipment is available at the Skate Frederick Pro Shop
and various online and local retailers. A limited amount of used equipment is
often available at our Fury website www.frederickfury.com and other online sites.

A few final costs to be aware of:

 Travel & Lodging: this is difficult to assess as each team has
different road games and tournaments. It would be safe to budget
              at least $600.00
 Tournament Fees: teams usually compete in three tournaments.
Each tournament has its own fee schedule. Again, it would be wise
to budget at least $700.00 for tournaments
 Team pictures, team parties and recognition gifts, optional team
logo clothing: Highly discretionary, but it would be a good idea to
              budget at least $100.00

PRACTICES & GAMES
Hockey is a very demanding sport that requires a range of sophisticated skills,
including skating, stick and puck handling, shooting and team play. We believe
in the USA Hockey recommendations that teams should practice
more than they play. Skills are honed during practice and employed
during games.

Each player and his or her family needs to understand the commitment to
attending practice and games prior to joining the Fury.

Practices are held twice a week. Depending upon the age level, this may be a full
ice, half-ice or mixture of full and half ice. All practice is held at Skate Frederick.
Once practice times and dates are set for each team, we do not change them so
that the parents can create a reliable transportation schedule. Ridesharing and
carpooling often may be arranged within the team.

Individual games are typically held on Saturdays and Sundays. Tournaments
may be also involve travel or play on Friday or Monday. However, most
tournaments are held over holiday weekends to minimize loss of school time.

This season all Fury teams will participate in the CBHL. Each team will have
three pre-season mini-camp practices and will hold on-ice development sessions
in addition to the weekly scheduled practices (each session will be 1 ½ hours).
The development sessions will occur in 2 or 3 week intervals and will be
conducted by Fury Hockey Director Brian Schulz.

The next page outlines more information regarding our training and practice
schedule.
