BANKRUPTCY & CREDITORS RIGHTS SECTION
It is the mission of the Bankruptcy and Creditors Rights Section to keep the members of the bar abreast of the changes in the state of bankruptcy law and its impact on other practice areas. In the spirit of its mission the Section hosted two Continuing Legal Education programs over the last year. The first took place on March 28, 2007 and addressed both consumer and business bankruptcy issues by presenting (a) " A Word To The Wise"- the views from Bankruptcy Trustees on the critical provisions of BAPCA and (b) Alternatives to Chapter 11- State Court Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors. Further, on June 12, 2007 the Section hosted a roundtable discussion with the Honorable Adlai S. Hardin, Jr., United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Southern District of New York. Judge Hardin shared his thoughts and insight on several of the Court’s recent decisions with the attendees. The Section has scheduled another round table discussion with the Judge Hardin on March 28, 2008. In addition, the Section intends to host a Continuing Legal Education program in the spring of 2008 that will be presented by the Clerk’s Office for the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, White Plains Division. The intent of this program will be to present common procedural practice tips from the Clerks office in order to help practitioners avoid common filing errors and potential pitfalls while commencing a bankruptcy case. The Section through its co-chairs Jeffrey A. Reich, Esq. and Arlene Gordon Oliver, Esq. has offered to work with the Pro Bono Committee on its program entitled “Don’t Borrow Trouble.” The intent of the program is to provide information to people who have been caught in the national sub-prime mortgage crisis. The Bankruptcy Committee intends to avail the Pro Bono Committee of the expertise and experience of its members in connection with its program. Very truly yours, Arlene Gordon Oliver and Jeffrey A.
