                                STEEL PIPE - SCHEDULE 40


PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1      DESCRIPTION

      A. Scope:
         1.   CONTRACTOR shall provide all labor, materials, equipment, services and in-
              cidentals as shown, specified and required to furnish and install steel pipe and
              fittings.
         2.   The extent of piping is shown on the Contract Drawings and in the schedules
              included in Section 15051, Buried Piping Installation and Section 15052,
              Exposed Piping Installation.

      B. Coordination:
         1.  Review installation procedures under other Sections and coordinate the Work
             that must be installed with or attached to the steel pipe Work.
         2.  Manufacturers and suppliers of the equipment and materials specified herein
             shall be required to review and satisfy all relevant requirements of other
             sections of the Contract Documents and the requirements of the Contract
             Drawings. The CONTRACTOR, manufacturer, supplier, fabricator and/or
             subcontractors furnishing and/or installing equipment, materials, services and
             specialties associated with this Section shall fully coordinate their efforts to
             avoid potential claims that are based on failure to review relevant Contract
             Documents, including the Contract Drawings.
         3.  The CONTRACTOR shall furnish and install all equipment, labor, materials,
             appurtenances, specialty items and services not provided by the
             CONTRACTOR'S manufacturers, suppliers, fabricators and/or subcontractors
             but required for complete and operable systems.

      C. Related work specified elsewhere that shall apply to all equipment, materials, labor
         and services furnished under this Section shall include, but not be limited to, the
         following:
         1.    Division 1, General Requirements:
               a.   Section 01330, Submittal Requirements.
               b.   Section 01651, Transportation and Handling of Materials and Equipment.
               c.   Section 01661, Storage of Materials and Equipment.
               d.   Section 01701, Warranty.
               e.   Section 01751, Starting and Placing Equipment in Operation.
               f.   Section 01752, Equipment and System Start-Up and Performance Testing.

1.2      QUALITY ASSURANCE

      A. Manufacturer's Qualifications:
         1. Manufacturer shall have a minimum of 5 years of experience producing each
             type steel pipe and fittings, and shall show evidence with his submittal of at
             least 5 installations in satisfactory operation. The qualifying installations shall
             consist of facilities with the approximate extent of steel pipe and fittings as this
             project.
         2. Steel pipe and fittings shall be the product of one manufacturer.

      B. Reference Standards: Comply with applicable provisions and recommendations of
         the following, except as otherwise shown or specified.
         1. ANSI B 1.1, Unified Inch Screw Threads.
         2. ANSI B 16.5, Pipe Flanges and Flanges Hinges.
         3. ANSI B 36.10, Welded and Seamless Wrought Steel Pipe.
         4. ASTM A 27, Specification for Mild- to Medium-Strength Carbon Steel
               Castings for General Application.
         5. ASTM A 53, Specification for Pipe, Steel, Black and Hot-Dipped, Zinc-Coated
               Welded and Seamless.
         6. ASTM A 134, Specification for Pipe, Steel, Electric-Fusion.
         7. ASTM A 135, Specification for Electric-Resistance-Welded Steel Pipe.
         8. ASTM A 181, Specification for Forged or Rolled Steel Pipe Flanges, Forged
               Fittings, and Valves and Parts for General Services.
         9. ASTM A 575, Specification for Merchant Quality Hot-Roll Carbon Steel Bars.
         10. ASTM D 1044, Standard Test Method for Resistance of Transparent Plastics to
               Surface Abrasion.
         11. ASTM D 2583, Standard Test Method for Indentation Hardness of Rigid
               Plastic by Means of a Barcol Impressor.

      C. Verification of Field Conditions: Verify correct indicated dimensions and sizes of
         pipe connections by field measurement prior to preparation of design drawings and
         fabrications of shop fabricated pipe.

1.3      SUBMITTALS

      A. Shop Drawings: Submit in accordance with the requirements of Section 01330,
         Submittal Requirements for approval the following:
         1. Steel Pipe: Detailed drawings and data on pipe, fittings, gaskets and appur-
              tenances.
              a.    Materials of construction, with referenced standards.
         2. Refer to Section 15051, Buried Piping Installation; Section 15052, Exposed
              Piping Installation; and Section 01330, Submittal Requirements.

      B. Certificates: Submit certificates of compliance with referenced standards.

      C. Manufacturer's Qualifications: In accordance with Paragraph 1.2.A of this Section.

1.4      PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

      A. Refer to Section 15000, General Piping Provisions; Section 15051, Buried Piping
         Installation; Section 15052, Exposed Piping Installation; Section 01651
         Transportation and Handling of Materials and Equipment; and Section 01661,
         Storage of Materials and Equipment.


PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1      STEEL PIPE

      A. Manufacturer and Materials:

         1.    Steel pipe shall be Schedule 40, unless otherwise shown on the Contract
               Drawings or specified and shall conform to ASTM A 53.
         2.    All special sections and fittings shall be made with component parts having the
               dimensions, ends, and other details as shown and as herein specified. All
               fittings shall have the same minimum wall thickness as the pipe.
         3.    Galvanized steel pipe shall conform to ASTM A 120. Schedule 40 and shall be
               hot-dip galvanized. Fittings shall be hot-dip galvanized malleable iron.
         4.    Flanged Joints: Pipe ends shall be fitted with steel pipe flanges in accordance
               with ASTM A 181. Flange shall be 150 lb., threaded. Gasket shall have full
               face, one piece construction of rubber, 1/16-inch thick for pipe 12-inches in
               diameter and smaller, and 3/32-inch thick for pipe larger than 12 inches. All
               bolts, nuts and studs on or required to connect pipe shall be of Type 316
               stainless steel.
         5.    Threaded Joints: Steel pipe less than 4 inches in diameter shall be furnished
               unless otherwise shown on the Contract Drawings or specified, with threaded
               ends and line couplings. Threads shall conform to ANSI B2.1, tapered threads
               3/4 inches per foot. Use Teflon tape on all threaded joints.
         6.    Couplings:
               a.     Sleeve Type, Flexible Couplings: Refer to Section 15122, Piping
                      Specialties.
               b.     Flanged Adapters: Refer to Section 15122, Piping Specialties.

      B. Coatings:
         1. Steel pipe shall be prime coated with a 1 mil epoxy coating per Section 15000,
              General Piping Provisions, Paragraph 1.16.
         2. Surface preparation and painting shall be as specified in Part 2.2 of this
              Section, Surface Preparation and Painting.

      C. Polyethylene Encasement:
         1. All buried steel pipe shall be double wrapped with polyethylene encasement
              specified in Section 15051, Buried Piping Installation, Paragraph 3.1.H.

2.2      SURFACE PREPARATION AND PAINTING

      A. Exposed Interior: For surface preparation and painting exposed interior piping,
         fittings and valves, refer to Paragraph 2.4.B of Section 09900, Painting.

      B. Exposed Exterior: For surface preparation and painting exposed exterior piping,
         fittings and valves, refer to Paragraph 2.4.C of Section 09900, Painting.

      C. Buried: For surface preparation and painted buried piping, valves, and fittings refer
         to Paragraphs 2.4.I, 2.4.J and 2.4.P of Section 09900, Painting.

      D. Submerged: For surface preparation and painting submerged piping, fittings and
         valves, refer to Paragraph 2.4.K of Section 09900, Painting.

2.3      IDENTIFICATION

      A. All pipe sections shall be marked in accordance with ASTM A53.

      B. Refer to Section 15451, Pipe Markers.


PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1      INSTALLATION

      A. For buried piping installation, refer to Section 15051, Buried Piping Installation.

      B. For exposed piping installation, refer to Section 15052, Exposed Piping Installation.

3.2      TESTING OF PIPING

      A. For buried piping installation, refer to Section 15051, Buried Piping Installation.

      B. For exposed piping installation, refer to Section 15052, Exposed Piping Installation.
