The project is also a provider of employment opportunities for professional artists in
Nottinghamshire and beyond.

5. Meeting aims
Involve meets all the five of the aims of the Arts Council.

Involve actively changes peoples’ lives through offering the opportunity to take
part in or experience high quality arts activities on a regular basis and in their
own centres as well as in local community venues.

Involve increases opportunities for cultural diversity in its programming (e.g. 6
carnival / cultural work/ Asian Elders group and with learning disability
companies). Our target groups (elders and learning disability) are diverse in their
nature and we offer a varied cultural programme to these groups.

Involve supports excellence through working only with professional artists and
national touring companies offering a high quality provision. The project supports
new ideas and initiatives (i.e. the new AWP training scheme with Leeds
University) and nurtures new artistic projects and collaborations throughout the
county (e.g Salamanda Tandem and Architects of Air / Dance 4 and Park Life
project / Social Services Day Service Modernisation plan).

Involve helps to build long-term stability in arts organisations through support and
advice and is a provider of investment for the creative talent of artists and
organisations.

Involve is seen by various artists and arts organisation as an increasing resource
for the arts by promoting artists and care staff creative partnerships and enabling
a diverse programme of activities. Next Stage has also been recognised as a
leader in the field, working with elders and adults with learning disabilities, as
evidenced in the recent ACE report into Arts in Health by Mike White.

6. Evaluation
Currently much of the evaluation of the Involve project has been statistical and
anecdotal. Evaluation has been used to shape the progression of the project.
Due to our target audience we have used a variety of non-verbal and non-written
methods so that all service users are given an opportunity to feedback on their
involvement. We have continually used photography and video to capture the
work and the peoples’ reactions. A lot of the evaluation has relied on the good
relationships with care staff to inform us of personal development and well being
evaluations of their service users.

Over the last 3 years we have been able to highlight some personal case studies
from service users and artists reflecting on their involvement in the project. In
order to develop the evaluation of the project we have made initial contact with
Nottingham University to examine the evaluation of the work that Involve carries
out. Working with Nottingham University an evaluation structure will be
developed that studies INVOLVE as an indicative programme that will help
address the need for increased and co-ordinated provision (as well as
demonstrable impact) for arts across the disabled community. Using
analytical data inputting from the evaluation feedback, a discreet piece of
work will be created and used as a pilot for a larger study of arts in health
projects currently being proposed (and fundraised for) by Nottingham University.

Central to our evaluation will be identifying an appropriate methodology to use
with our diverse client group. Our evaluation brief will include the production of 7
academic evidence of the health benefits of the programme and it’s impact on
service users. This is a new area of work for Involve, but one that is clearly
needed to win the argument for sourcing further funding and potentially
mainstreaming the service. Without clear “evidence based research” it is
increasingly difficult to access monies to support the project from health sources.
We are confident that the research will link into current strategic priorities for
regional and national Arts in Health initiatives, and will provide valuable insights
for other arts in health projects regionally.
