									Maenam Beach - Koh Samui
Perhaps it's the excellent views of Koh Phangan that have kept Maenam as Samui's last predominantly backpacker
beach. Or maybe it's the fact that many of its resorts are located at the end of long rambling pathways, affording a
degree of privacy unavailable elsewhere. Either way, Maenam is still the place to be while away for a few weeks (or
months) on a low budget, staying in one of the many cheap fan bungalow operations that are dotted along the beach.

Maenam Shopping
Maenam is more of a residential area than a shopping hub but in amongst the cafes and restaurants there are some
great shops, mainly selling teak and asian style furniture. The furniture stores are generally well established which is
great if you need advice on shipping your purchase home. Many shops offer an international shipping service at
reasonable prices.

Beautiful World

One of Samui's better furniture shops, Beautiful World stocks an impressive range of high quality teak, rosewood,
mahogany and water hyacinth furniture. Aimed mainly at the export market, the owner Carl Graham guarantees that
customers can save between 40 and 50 percent on purchasing similar items in Europe.

All the furniture, which includes beds, tables, wardrobes, cabinets, chairs, picture frames and carvings, is made from
fully certified sustainable sources, unlike a lot of the wood sold on the island, which comes from illegally logged
rainforest in Burma - customers are welcome to view Beautiful World's certificates upon request. The shop will
arrange shipping to anywhere in the world. Expect to pay around 9,000 Baht to ship two cubic metres to
Europe. Beautiful World, Maenam, Open 10.30am - 7pm daily.

Benjavadee

Benjavadee is worth a visit to check out what's possibly the largest selection of handicrafts, homeware and furniture
available on the island. Everything from ceramics, rattan mats, Buddha statues, coconut wood bowls, china tea
services to handbags, jewellery and picture frames are on sale over two spacious floors.

Aimed mainly at expats, there are also some nice larger items of furniture, such as beds, dining tables and wardrobes
on sale - though the shop can arrange shipping for tourists interested in larger pieces. Route 4169, Maenam, Open
10am - 7pm daily.

Java Teak

Mainly aimed at resident ex-pats seeking luxurious furniture for their villas, Java Teak's prices are reasonable
enough that, even with additional shipping costs, everything is still considerably cheaper than in the West and
therefore well worth considering for a more substantial souvenir.

The shop stocks around sixty pieces of handmade furniture at any given time, but can also order over one thousand
others from its extensive catalogue. The range includes small chests for 4,000 Baht, comfy Planters chairs for 7,000
Baht, unique Valet stands for only 3,000 Baht and ornate four poster beds for 35,000 Baht. Maenam. Open 9.30am
- 6.30pm.

Samui Cera

Introducing a fine range of high quality ceramics, Samui Cera counts many of the island's top hotels amongst its
customers and has two outlets - their headquarters in Maenam, which has imperfect pieces on sale from as little as
30 Baht, and the Just A Detail branch in Chaweng, which sells the top products from its range. Their range includes
cups, mugs, plates and bowls and larger items such as sinks and vases.

All the pieces on sale are fired at 1250 degrees and are oven, microwave and dishwasher safe. There's a wide variety
of designs and colours on offer and all the pieces get their base tone from local coconut wood ash mixed with clay,
which results in a rich earthy finish. To see the potters in action, visitors are welcome at the Maenam branch -
anyone interested is also welcome to have a go at making their own pot. Samui Cera at Just A Detail, Central
Chaweng, opposite the Chedi Spa, open 12pm -11pm. Maenam, near Java Teak, open 8am - 5pm

Maenam Dining and Restaurants
Maenam beach is one of Samui's prettiest and quietest beaches. There are plenty of restaurants to suit every budget,
from 5 star dining to more casual local venues. While the scene is on a small scale there is still a good choice of
food from around the world. Of course alongside the international cuisine there are all types of Thai food on offer,
from noodle soup stalls to Royal Thai dishes. Whether its a posh evening out with or simply grabbing a quick bite to
eat, Maenam has it all.
Angela's Bakery
Angela's bakery has been open for nearly 10 years and is a real
Samui institution. Renowned for her delicious bakery products,
the cafe attached to the bakery is pretty fabulous too.

The menu consists of European favourites and Angela's own
innovative creations. The breakfasts here come highly
recommended and are just the thing if you need a pick-me-up the
after a hard night on the town! Alternatively try one of the
excellent deli sandwiches or salads.

The bakery also does takeaways and Angela offers a catering
service. For more information telephone: 077427396. Open
8am till 6pm, Route 4169, Maenam.

Eddy's Modern Food & Drinks

For simple and yummy comfort food, head to Eddy's in Maenam. Eddy's has been recommended by the Rough
Guide to Thailand due to its great value for money and friendly staff. Although definitely not a 5 star dining
experience, the menu is full of well loved dishes. The breakfasts here are delicious and served in generous portions.
Eddy's is a great place to go for a casual meal in comfortable surroundings. Telephone: 077245127. 3/3 Moo 1,
Route 4169, Maenam

Food Stop

Food Stop, owned by Lek Boonyawut, serves up a range of Thai, international and deliciously authentic Italian
cuisine. The Italian is given its edge by virtue of the fact that Lek spent 20 years in Turin running her own
restaurant, before feeling the lure of home and returning to her native Thailand. The fresh pasta dishes are all highly
recommended and are perhaps best enjoyed in the very pleasant garden out back on a warm evening (which, luckily
enough, they always are) with a glass of beer or two. Route 4169, near 711, Maenam.

La Tratoria

On the main ring road in Maenam is La Tratoria restaurant. The menu has a selection of delicious Italian dishes all
at reasonable prices. The restaurant itself is classic and simple in style with a very relaxing atmosphere. La Tratoria
also has a large wine list which complements the menu perfectly. Helping you enjoy your meal are the attentive and
extremely polite staff. The lasagne at La Tratoria is a delicious example of traditional Italian cooking, although a bit
of a belt buster! Open 12 till 10pm, Route 4169, Maenam

Napasai
Napasai resort's signature restaurant offers a choice between
French or Royal Thai cuisine. The main restaurant is perched on
a hill and its huge windows give panoramic views of the
stunning coastline. For customers requiring more privacy there
are four outdoor wooden salas providing a secluded, romantic
experience.

The French side of the menu is under the expert care of master
chef Michel Claustre. Recommended dishes with a French flair
include the Smoked Duck Breast Carpaccio with Mango Salsa
and the Rack of Lamb with herb crust. Khun Suvit is responsible
for the excellent Royal Thai dishes on offer. His Gaeng Khiew
Warn Goong Sod (Famous green curry with fresh prawns and
eggplant in coconut milk) is a great example of Thai cuisine at
its best. The kitchen is open from 12-2.30pm for lunch and from 6-10pm for dinner. Napasai Resort, Route 4169,
Maenam.

Roma
Bringing a touch of the Riviera to Samui, Roma at Paradise
Beach Resort makes the most of its tranquil beachside setting.

The modern leaning menu includes treats such as Crema di
Zucca ai Pistacchi e Aceto ai Lamponi (Pumpkin cream soup
with pistachios and perfumed with raspberry vinegar), Filetto di
Branzino ai Funghi Porcini (Grilled fillet of sea bass topped with
boletus mushrooms, white wine sauce and a selection of Italian
herbs) and Involtini alla Romana con Polenta al Profumo di
Tartufo (Veal Roulade with Parma ham and basil served with
truffle perfumed polenta and vegetables) as well as more classic
fare.

A fine Italian wine list provides a perfect match for the food.
Paradise Beach Resort, Maenam.

Sala Thai

Located at Santiburi Dusit Resort, Sala Thai is set in a lush tropical garden. The restaurant serves the finest Royal
Thai cuisine, which authentically tones down the heat and incorporates delicate European flavours. Dishes such as
Fuk thong geng kati (Pumpkin with coconut curry) and Geang som malakor kab pla insee (rich orange curry of
green papaya and king fish) are difficult to find elsewhere and are well worth sampling here. Immaculate service
and presentation, low-key lighting and Thai music all add to the experience. Maenam, Tel. 077 425 031. Open
6pm - 11pm.

Maenam Nightlife and Bars
Many will tell you that Maenam is a dead-end as far as nightlife goes. This is not entirely true. Sure it doesn't have
trendy discos, a-gogo-bars and the like, but it certainly isn't dead. It has some great pubs (bars) and is one place
where having a quiet drink with your partner or friends needn't necessarily be land based. Not only that, the hotels
and resorts in the area, often have exciting night-time entertainment options that will certainly keep you up till the
'wee-hours'
Start your evening at one of the local meditation centres with a relaxing foot massage or an hour's yoga class. Both
are sure to make you feel refreshed and ready on take on an evening of wining and dining; something Maenam is
renowned for.

A popular choice for the early part of the evening is to go on a sunset cruise. There is no better way, than to begin a
romantic evening drifting along on a boat, the sun dipping beyond the waves as you sip cocktails with your partner.
Some of these charters include dinner on-board while you listen to the gentle lap of water while you drift along.

When romance is in the air, Maenam offers some charming dining options, with cuisines that are both extensive and
varied. After your meal, slip into one of the local bars or lounges, located within the numerous hotels or elsewhere
in this palm fringed seaside village. Here you'll discover some world-class musical entertainment. Live bands, solo
artists; strumming a guitar in a corner, or classic Thai music that gently caresses the atmosphere, creating a tender,
dreamy feel to the night air.

Meditation and Yoga

Start your evening attending one of the relaxing meditation or yoga classes, or choose to be pampered by a
reflexology expert. After a day in the sun, a couple of hours spent relaxing in this manner will certainly put you in
the mood for some romance. If having someone, twiddling your toes doesn't suit you, why not have your future told
by a tarot reader or learn to do it yourself. One of the places to do this in the area is at the Axolotl Village Tel: +66

Saturdays at 17:00 and returning at 19:30 p.m. Drinks and
canapes are included in the price.

Also on offer here are Full Moon cruises that take guests along
the picturesque coastline of the island and include dinner and
drinks. If being taken, doesn't suit you and you would prefer a
romantic cruise alone, you can also charter the boat (including its
captain and boat-boy) for a nominal fee. Select your own
romantic course towards the sunset or opt to sail to one of the
