There are four categories of lab chromatography supplies: i) regular TLC (0.25 mm), ii)
preparative TLC (0.5 mm), iii) silica gel for column chromatography; iv) specialty materials.
Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) plates
TLC plates are kept in WTHR 440. Regular TLC plates (0.25 mm; EMScience, 5715-7) are used
for analytical purposes and are located on top of the TLC-cutting bench. Preparative TLCs (0.5
mm; EMScience, 5744-7), which can be used to purify small amounts (5–25 mg) of materials,
are located in the cabinet under the TLC-cutting area. Both of these contain an UV fluorescent
indicator. Reserves of these TLC plates are kept in the bench next to the TLC area under the
The silica gel used for flash column chromatography (Mesh size? ICN, 402776) is located in
WTHR 440 next to the TLC cutting area, in a blue drum identified as “Silica Gel – Wei Group.”
If a new drum is ordered, please make sure that the old one is completely used up before
opening, to preserve freshness.
To order chromatography supplies:
Three (3) boxes of 0.25-mm TLC plates (from 1st floor store room) should be ordered when only
2 boxes are remaining in the storage cabinet. Three (3) boxes of Prep TLC plates (catalog #
1616125) should be ordered when only 1 box is remaining. A new drum of silica gel (catalog #
402776, 25 kg) should be ordered when ¼ of the drum is remaining.
Contact Bodman (1-800-241-8774) for silical gel and Sorbent Technologies Inc. (1-866-767-
2832) for Prep. TLC plates to verify actual prices and fill the Form 125. An example is included
at the end of this document. Obtain the professor’s signature and submit the form to the
Procurement Office (WTHR 225). When the supplies arrive, be sure to write the date received
and “Wei Group” on each box. Store these under the old boxes, so the old ones will be used first.
Other types of TLC plates are also kept in the storage cabinet. Glass-backed alumina (neutral and
basic) with fluorescent indicators and silica without fluorescent indicator are available for
analytical TLC. Alumina, reverse-phase and silica are also available on aluminum or plastic-
backed plates. To order special TLC supplies consult the Bodman catalog and follow the same
instructions for regular TLC plates.
