Ellenborough win a place in the Junior British League
Having won the London (North) regional competition of the National Junior League,
Ellenborough‟s under 18 players became eligible to take part in the play-offs for a
place next season in the prestigious Junior British League.
Sixteen teams were to take part in the Play-Offs for the six available places at the
South Meres Leisure Centre at Grantham in Lincolnshire on 18th July, and the
Ellenborough squad made its way north on that day.
The qualifiers were to be found from the winners of four groups, each team playing
the other three. In addition two more teams would be added after the remaining 12
teams played in a knock-out competition.
The Ellenborough team comprising of Bradley Tuttle, Luke Walsh, Sam Cowan and
Daniel Wright, and looked after by brilliant coach Tibor “Tibi” Kadar were placed in
a group with consisting of the two teams from Sussex, Horsham and North Mundham,
plus the powerful Havering Club, from Romford.
The first two matches produced superb wins over the Sussex teams, by 6-0 and 5-1.
Meanwhile, Havering had won their matches against the same opponents by 5-1 and
5-1. This meant that a 3-3 draw in the last match would be sufficient.
The first two matches in the decider went to Ellenborough fairly comfortably, and one
more win was needed. Unfortunately, everything then went „pear-shaped‟, and the
team found themselves losing 2-3! However, Luke Walsh then produced a great win
over Havering‟s David Penrose and Ellenborough were in the Junior British League!
