Background
The Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics (WTCHG) is part of the Nuffield Department of
Clinical Medicine within the University of Oxford. The Centre undertakes research into the
identification of genes responsible for susceptibility in multifactorial diseases. Presently the WTCHG
has around 470 scientists and support staff and had a £22M p.a. grant turnover in 2008/09.

The WTCHG comprises several linked buildings:
 The Henry Wellcome Building of Genomic Medicine (HWBGM), which houses multi-disciplinary
    research teams in human genetics, functional genomics, bioinformatics, statistical genetics and
    structural biology
 The Henry Wellcome Building for Molecular Physiology (HWBMP) which houses the Centre for
    Cellular & Molecular Physiology (CCMP)
 The Henry Wellcome Building for Particle Imaging (HWBPI) which houses the Oxford Particle
    Imaging Centre (OPIC) and
 The Oxford Protein Production Facility (OPPF) which is situated in a terrapin pending its relocation
    to another site.
The buildings are collectively referred to as the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics (WTCHG)
in this document.

Overview
The purpose of the job is to provide evening alarm monitoring and reception cover to the WTCHG
(with the support of laboratory support/helpdesk/Health & Safety Officer); to deal with enquiries and
requests from visitors and staff and have responsibility for agreed elements of the-day-to-day
functioning of the building e.g. access control, CCTV monitoring, critical alarms and health & safety
monitoring.

Responsibilities
1.   To monitor building critical alarms and to carry out regular patrols of WTCHG, checking on
     equipment and alarms.
2.   To monitor the security and Health and Safety cameras (CCTV) system for WTCHG and inform
     site security/facilities of any incidents noted; to assist the facilities team in maintaining the
     system
3.   To assist the facilities team in responding to building critical alarms and ensuring action is
     taken; to assist the facilities team in maintaining the system
4.   To monitor other alarms in reception e.g. fire panel, Oxygen, Liquid Nitrogen
5.   To monitor the stores, rear door and link lobby intercom
6.   To provide the initial response to alarms and faults calling for assistance where necessary
7.   To ensure the WTCHG is secure and lights turned off at the end of the shift
8.   To receive all visitors to the WTCHG, enter their details on the Centre’s systems, and arrange
     for them to be collected by their host or to provide access via the electronic access control
     system for authorised visitors and contractors; to help facilities maintain the access control
     system

9.     To take all incoming calls to the WTCHG and transfer to the staff/departments concerned; to
       assist the administration/facilities to maintain the staff contact list
10.    To deal with enquiries from people visiting WTCHG and from staff, directing them to the most
       appropriate contact
11.    To issue internal keys to authorised staff and helping to maintain the key security cabinets in
       accordance with policy
12.    To enter visitor data/sorting parking permits for the following day’s visitors and contractors
13.    To input deliveries on to the University accounts system
14.    To provide holiday and sickness cover for Reception at times other than those stated above,
       subject to availability. The core reception hours are 08.00 to 23.00 Monday through to Friday.
15.    Any other duties commensurate with the grade that may reasonably be required by the Building
       Facility Manager

Selection Criteria
Essential
1.     Educated to at lease GCSE level or equivalent with grade C or above in English and Maths
2.     Excellent telephone manner and ability to communicate with a wide range of people
3.     Experience of Microsoft Word and Excel in a Windows environment (or ability to cross-train)
4.     Ability to acquire (with training) an understanding of the Centre’s basic equipment in order to
       deal with straightforward fault reports and enquiries
5.     Ability to prioritise

If you come from outside the area, you may be interested to know that as well as the famous tourist
attractions such as the ‘dreaming spires’ of all the lovely old buildings, the river and a number of
attractive parks and gardens, Oxford also has a busy shopping centre and a lively nightlife, particularly
during term time. Housing is relatively expensive within the city, but nearby areas such as Didcot or
Bicester are more reasonable priced. Although car parking is difficult during the day, there are good
train and bus services, including several ‘Park and Ride’ routes; and of course, lots of cycle paths.

Pay and Benefits
Pay and benefits for part-time appointments are worked out on a ‘pro rata’ basis.

The salary offered for full-time appointment to this job will be in the University grade 3 range £17,111
to £19,743 (discretionary to £21,565), depending on qualifications and experience. If you are
appointed at a salary below the top of this range, your salary will automatically be increased each year
until you have reached the top point. There is also an annual ‘cost of living’ salary review, which
normally takes place in summer each year.

For a full-time appointment, the annual holiday entitlement will be 38 days (including 8 public
holidays). Some of these days may need to be reserved for periods when the Centre is closed over
Christmas and Easter. You will be given details of those dates well in advance. Starting and finishing
times are as stated at the top of this document.

The appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a 6 month probationary period, during which
the notice period will be one month on either side. Once the appointment has been confirmed, the
notice period will be three months either side.

The post will be funded by the Department and is available to 31 March 2011 in the first instance; it is
expected that the post will continue thereafter in periods of five years, subject to further funding from
our major sponsors.

The age of retirement for university appointments is the 30 July before your 66 th birthday.. Staff are
eligible to join the Oxford Staff Pension Scheme (OSPS), which provides a pension and lumps sum at
retirement, based on length of service and final salary; the employee contribution rate is currently
6.35% Almost everyone is eligible to join and, subject to the Statement of Pensions Policy, which will
be issued to the successful candidate, all new staff are automatically treated as members unless they
give notice in writing to say they do not wish to take part in the scheme. The University also offers a
Stakeholder pension scheme which most employees may join either instead of or in addition to the
main scheme.
