D.1.3
Whole Governing Body Training
As part of the package offered by Governor Development & Training Services, governing
bodies are entitled to one whole governing body training session within each financial year,
at no additional cost, on a topic tailored to the requirements of the governing body. A
‘session’ is one training or briefing session for governors, up to a maximum of three hours,
delivered at the school or other agreed venue. Staff from the Section can assist with the
planning of the session, and will make arrangements with an appropriate facilitator.
Frequently governing bodies choose to use such time spent together partly in getting to
know each other better, partly in clarifying some of their roles and responsibilities. In
each case the final programme will be decided in discussion with governor and/or staff
representatives so that it would reflect the particular needs of the group.
In organising a training session governors are advised to make the arrangements well
ahead. As a first step, fix a couple of possible dates in discussion with as many other
governors as possible (perhaps at a termly GB meeting) so that governors can note the
date in their diaries. Having discussed the event in general terms at the main meeting, a
representative of the governing body will liaise with Governor Development & Training
Section over the arrangements. When a date has been confirmed, GD&T will confirm all
details to all members of the governing body and liaise with the school over any specific
arrangements needed for the day.
Sometimes governing bodies have needed guidance involving other sections of the LA on a
specific issue. This can be arranged under this service.
