                                  Information about the Written
                                   Jurisprudence Examination

The College of Psychologists of British Columbia (CPBC) requires applicants to successfully
complete the Written Jurisprudence Examination as part of the registration process. The
examination is designed to assess an applicant’s understanding and knowledge of (a) professional
conduct and ethical principles and (b) legislative provisions relevant to the practice of psychology
in British Columbia.

1. The Written Jurisprudence Exam is held at the College offices located at 404 - 1755 W. Broadway,
   Vancouver, BC and will be offered at 1:00 pm on the following dates except as noted:

It is the responsibility of the applicant to check the website for updates and schedule changes

2. The Registration Committee expects that all applicants will write the examination at the
   College office. However, the Registration Committee will review requests from applicants to
   have the examination proctored by the psychology regulatory body in another jurisdiction if
   taking the examination at the College office is not possible. Granting the request is dependent
   in part on the ability of the College to make timely arrangements with the other jurisdiction.
   An administrative fee of $200.00 plus any fees charged by the other jurisdiction must be paid
   by the applicant.

3. In order to sit for the examination applicants must: (1) have written permission from the
   Registration Committee (see the regular or reciprocal/mobility flowchart); (2) submit full
   payment by cheque or money order; and (3) submit the completed Request to be Scheduled
   form. Items 2 and 3 must be received at the College office no later than seven (7) calendar
   days before the examination date (e.g., the Monday before the examination date).

4. The examination fee is non-refundable. It may be applied to a different sitting if written notice
   is provided by noon on the Friday preceding the examination.

5. The examination is comprised of 50 multiple choice questions and applicants have two (2) hours
   to complete it.

6. All applicants will receive written notification about their performance on the examination. This
   will include the total score as well as feedback regarding which statutes and documents the
   applicant performed poorly on.

7. The passing score is 40.

8. All applicants can write the jurisprudence examination up to three times within the two (2) year
   application period. Applicants who fail the written jurisprudence examination the third time will
   have their application closed. These individuals can make an application for registration as a new
   applicant.

9. The examination fee is $150.00 per examination. The reciprocal and mobility application fee also
   include one Written Jurisprudence Examination fee.

10. The provincial statutes on which the examination is based can be purchased from Crown
    Publications Inc. at (250) 386-4636 or http://www.crownpub.bc.ca

11. It is the applicant’s responsibility to continue to check the website for updates

12. The distribution of questions for the Written Jurisprudence Examination and the statutes and
    documents upon which it is based are provided below:

   30 – 35 questions:
   The College of Psychologists of British Columbia’s Code of Conduct.

   1-5 questions:
   The College of Psychologists of British Columbia’s Bylaws
   The Health Professions Act
   The Psychologists Regulation.

   10-15 questions on the following:
   Child, Family and Community Services Act
   Family Relations Act
   Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act
   Infants Act
   Health Care (Consent) and Care Facility (Admission) Act
   Human Rights Code
   Mental Health Act
   Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA)
   Motor Vehicle Act
   Youth Justice Act (provincial)
   Youth Criminal Justice Act (federal)
