                  Name of student: ………………………………….
Dear Tutor,

We would be grateful if you would provide a brief reference, using the form attached, for the
above student who has applied for an internship on the Inspiring the Best programme, being run
by the Institute of Education.

The University has available a limited number of internships in secondary schools within this
national programme. The aim is to recruit to this pilot programme 100–120 of the country’s most
able undergraduates in mathematics, science, engineering and technology in their penultimate
year of study at some of our leading universities. We will be looking for undergraduates who are
predicted to gain a 2:1 degree or better and who are ambitious, motivated to achieve and who
want to make a difference.

What does the internship entail?

After preparation by the Institute, the interns on our programme will spend 20 days at the end of
this academic year (28th June to 23rd July 2010) in a secondary school in groups of up to 5 in
any one school. They will receive a tax-free bursary of £800 on completion of the 20 days.

Interns will get opportunities:

     to engage with young people in their learning of their subject, sharing their knowledge
       and enthusiasm, and inspiring them to aim to be the best they can;

     to interact with the managers and senior members of the school staff and gain some
       understanding of the issues and processes of managing a complex organisation such
       as a large secondary school;

     working in groups, to conduct a small-scale research enquiry that is intended to make a
      real and lasting contribution to the school.

At the end of the internship they will have evidence that they have demonstrated and developed
a range of key transferable skills.

In anticipation of your reply, thank you for your help in providing this reference.
