PR 1506
                                                                                        7 March 2008

For Immediate Release

                                        Bright idea
The future is bright orange, in the form of a high visibility wallet, for people with special
needs who use public transport in and around Torbay.

Members of SPOT – Speaking Out in Torbay -- a Mencap and Torbay Care Trust-
supported local group for people with learning disabilities, have produced the fluorescent
travel wallets with help from Torbay Council.

The wallets let bus and taxi drivers and railway staff know that the passengers may have
special needs. They contain information such as where they want to go, special
requirements such as being told when they have arrived at their destination, emergency
numbers and possible details of their disability.

Each person who has a wallet will be able to choose what information they want to include
in it.

The initiative has the full backing of bus companies Stagecoach and First.

Torbay Council's Equalities Champion, Cllr Louisa Aiton, said: "Congratulations to
members of SPOT for coming up with this great idea. We are pleased to have been able to
work with them to bring the project to fruition.

                                                                                                      -1-
"These wallets will give people with special needs the confidence to use buses, taxis and
trains, and they will also enable staff to recognise that customers may need some extra
help."

The wallets are also being made available to people who may be frail or have a disability.
They can be obtained free of charge by contacting Torbay Council Transport Officer Andy
Young on 01803 208823 or SPOT Co-ordinator Nikki Henderson on 01803 540682.

Torbay Mayor Nick Bye will attend the official launch of the wallet initiative in the Grace
Murrell Suite at Torquay's Riviera International Centre on Thursday 13 March. There will
be information displays and a "how to use it" guide. The event, which gets underway at
11am, is open to the public, and wallets will be handed out on request.

Notes for editors
You are invited to cover the launch of this initiative on Thursday 13 March. Mayor Nick Bye
is due to attend some time between 12.30 and 1pm.
