What Is SCM and What Does It Pay

According to the Council of Supply Chain Management (SCM ), supply chain
management, plans, implements, and controls the efficient flow and storage of goods, services,
and related information from the point of origin to the point of consumption in order to meet end
user or retail customers' requirements. The functions included in a typical corporate supply
chain management organization include SCM system design, plant and warehouse site selection,
procurement, production scheduling, SCM related customer service, inventory control, freight
transportation planning, warehousing design and management, and returned goods management.

U.S. News and World Report has called supply chain management one of the hottest 20 job
tracks of the new century. “Logistics Manager” was also rated one of the hottest jobs for college
graduates in the April 15, 2007 issue of Parade magazine. The National Association of Colleges
and Employers reports that 2007 starting salaries for SCM averaged $45,771.
