Objective: TLW use benchmarks to order fractions

Purpose: Benchmarks give students a point of reference for checking answers for
reasonableness.

TEKS: 7.1B

Lesson source: CScope Unit

Textbook correlation: CHAPTER 5

Materials: map pencils, white boards, copies of activities, fraction follies cards

Modifications/Accommodations/Accelerations: per individual students’ IEP –
manipulatives (used &/or created); reduced quantity on homework; extra time to
complete; critical thinking problems & uncommon fractions

Warm-up: 1-5 (evaluating expressions)

Journal question: Explain how using benchmarks can help you order rational numbers.

Lesson: Fraction, Decimal, Percent Equivalents

Engage: TTW display blank 100-grid on smart board and ask students to state the value
of 1 square, 1 row, 50%...

Explore/explain: TLW work with partner to order cards from Fraction Follies cards in
ascending order using the benchmarks: 0, ¼, ½, ¾, 1/10 & 1. TTW debrief activity
with questioning

Extend: TLW complete “Fraction-Decimal-Percent Benchmarks” using strategies
developed with Fraction Follies.

Evaluate: TLW complete “Fraction-Decimal-Percent Summary” before Friday.

Objective: TLW between equivalent forms of rational numbers

Purpose: To be a more efficient problem solver

TEKS: 7.1

Lesson source: CScope unit 1, lesson 1, day 4

Textbook correlation: chapter 5

Materials: Making the Switch handout, F-D-P summary from previous lesson

Modifications/Accommodations: as per students’ IEP and/or need

Warm-up: Question from “Problem of the Day” resource

Journal question: Explain how to convert from a fraction to a decimal?

Lesson: Making the Switch

Engage: TTW review needed vocabulary & techniques: consecutive whole numbers,
equivalent forms, ascending order, numerator, denominator…

Explore/explain: TLW work with learning partner to complete “Making the Switch”
activity. TTW debrief with questioning throughout process.

Extend: TLW apply compare & conversion skill to real-world problem solving and be
able to justify solution

Evaluate: TLW complete journal question and continue to complete FDP summary

Materials: white boards, smart board

Modifications/Accommodations: As per student IEP and/or need

Warm-up: Problem of the day

Journal question: What does the term percent mean and how can you convert fractions
& decimals to percents?

Lesson: The final Step - Percents

Engage: TTW return to FDP benchmark activity from previous lesson and question
students about % of 100 grid that is covered & how they knew that to be true.

Explore/explain: TLW work with learning partner to complete percent relations note
page. TTW debrief with questioning.

Extend: TLW play “Order Up” using go fish rules and order up cards

Evaluate: Students will complete journal question & FDP summary page

Friday, 9-25-09

Objective: TLW demonstrate mastery of ordering & comparing rational numbers

Purpose: To be sure all students have mastered this step in the learning process before
continuing to operations with rational numbers.

TEKS: 7.1

Lesson source: Quiz questions from CScope & released TAKS tests

Textbook correlation: chapter 5

Materials: copies of quiz, math binder

Modifications/Accommodations: as per student IEP and/or need

Warm-up: Problem of the day

Journal question: Summarize the processes for converting to AND from all 3 forms of
rational numbers (FDP)

Lesson: FDP quiz

Engage: TTW review steps and processes to convert & compare rational numbers

Explore/explain: Students may use anything in their math binder to help them be
successful on the quiz.
