IRVINGTON UNION FREE DISTRICT GUIDANCE PLAN
K-12
2006
INTRODUCTION
Mission Statement of the Irvington School District
The primary mission of our schools is to help each student discover – and achieve - his or
her highest potential. To fulfill that purpose, we must constantly strive to provide an
educational environment that is both challenging and supportive. It is vital that we offer
every student the opportunity to develop a life-long dedication to learning. Our schools
emphasize the skills necessary for creative and critical thinking and recognize the
importance of communication in the contemporary world. We set the highest standards
for written and oral expression and reading comprehension.
Our specific expectations for Irvington students fall under three major categories:
1) Academic achievement.
2) Personal/Social responsibility, and individual development.
3) Career/ College investigation.
While academic achievement – including a solid foundation of knowledge, creative and
critical thinking skills and communication skills – is the paramount goal of our
educational system, it is also critical that every student fully understand that he or she is a
member of society and must play an ethical and constructive role there. As a result, we
seek to cultivate in all students the conviction that they have the ability – and the
obligation – to “make a difference” by combining academic excellence with a strong
sense of civic consciousness. Additionally, the physical and mental well being of each
student as he or she advances through our system is vital. Therefore, our schools seek to
promote in each individual a strong sense of self-respect and self-esteem, develop the
confidence, discipline and motivation of every individual, and engage each student in
critical but balanced self-evaluation.
District Guidance Philosophy
The Guidance Plan for the district plays a critical role in supporting all three goals stated
in the mission statement for our students. The Guidance Plan is multifaceted and
involves all members of the school community. Guidance counselors, psychologists and
social worker provide direct counseling services to students. Just as importantly,
guidance objectives are incorporated into curriculum, special activities, school policies
and practices. Activities directed toward maintaining and monitoring student records,
coordinating services for students, providing feedback to students and parents, providing
exposure and information about community and career options all support the academic
and personal development of the whole child.
