APPENDIX 3 - SDH OPTICAL LINE SYSTEM TESTING

     INTRODUCTION
Purpose

This document specifies a commissioning procedure for establishing the correct operation of an SDH
handover between BT and a International Facilities Operator (IFA Customer), and the operation of 2
Mbits/s, VC12 and VC4 payloads carried across that handover. The document assumes that the two
networks are linked via one In-Span Handover line system running at an aggregate rate of STM-1 or
STM-4. The recommendation is applicable to SDH handover using equipment supplied by a single
vendor

This document specifies the testing that will be carried out by BT and IFA Customer personnel, the
IFA Customer may wish to conduct addtional tests.

During testing, the synchronisation arrangements for the link should be set up as they will be in final
operation. This is normally with synchronisation for both ADMs being provided by the ordering party.

Some of the tests described in this recommendation may have to be modified or omitted if they are
likely to have an adverse effect on live network traffic. Any changes to the testing program should be
agreed between the BT and the IFA Customer.

When carrying out bit error rate tests, recognition should be given to the principles outlined in ITU(T)
M2100 in relation to acceptable errors and length of circuits.

PRE-REQUISITES

Test Entry Criteria

1)        The ADMs at each end of the link have been commissioned in standalone mode in accordance
with BT’s and the IFA Customer's internal test procedures. The equipment should be set to a known
state, and all active alarms should be noted.

2)        Fully commissioned (main path and protected path) fibre at both ends, and in between.

Optical Safety

BEFORE POWER IS APPLIED TO ANY OPTICAL EQUIPMENT AT EITHER END,
PERSONNEL AT EACH END OF THE LINK SHALL CONFIRM TO PERSONNEL AT THE
OTHER END THAT THEY ARE READY TO BEGIN TESTING, AND THAT THEY HAVE
TAKEN THE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS.

ALL STAFF WORKING ON OPTICAL SYSTEMS MUST BE ADEQUATELY TRAINED.

There are some outstanding issues concerning how people should work safely on optical fibre
line systems.

There is to be a project on this issue lead by the experts in this area, they have advised the
following;-

All Handover links should NOT be operated on `LIVE' but should be assumed to be
HAZARDOUS.

          i)       Maintain cleanliness of fibre and handle fibre with care.
          ii)      Ensure all labelling is clearly visible at all times and is not
          removed.
          iii)     Only use approved methods and materials for cleaning optical
          fibres.
          iv)      All maintenance and repair work must be carried out at repair
          centres equipped for the purpose.

Precautions against Electrostatic Discharge

               i) All personnel shall follow the appropriate electrostatic protection procedures.

FEATURES TO BE TESTED

Optical Power and Path Continuity

The objectives of this test are:

1) To gain confidence in the end-to-end continuity, quality of fibre (particularly at joints) and desired
signal strength through the fibre.

2) To allow all other tests to be carried out.

              appropriate connection point on the ODF at the IFA
              Customer site.
3             At the BT site, the BT test team connects an optical power       N/A
              meter (OPM) to the receive fibre via the optical distribution
              frame (ODF).
4             IFA Customer test team re-enables their laser.                                   (dBm)
              If ALS is operational, the laser will have to be restarted
              using Restart for Test.
              BT test team measures and records the OPM reading for the
              path.
5             IFA Customer test team instructs the BT test team to             N/A
              disable their laser and then connect the transmit fibre at the
              BT site.
6             BT test team connects the transmit fibre to the appropriate      N/A
              connection point on the ODF at the BT site.
7             IFA Customer test team connects an optical power meter           N/A
              (OPM) to the receive fibre via the ODF.
8             BT test team re-enables their laser. IFA Customer test team                      (dBm)
              measures and records the OPM reading for the path.
9             Repeat for second optical path if provided.

After this test sequence has been completed both fibres should be connected and the lasers enabled in
both directions. The system should be alarm free before continuing with the next test.

Distant Alarm Tests at IFA Customer and BT Sites

The objective of this test is to gain confidence in the stability of the setup including the test equipment
by verifying error free traffic flow when transmitting between the IFA Customer and BT. The test is
repeated for each optical path.

Error Free Traffic On VC12 Paths

This test is performed in addtion to the above if VC12 paths are required.

Test Exit Criteria

The test exit criteria are as follows:

          i)         All relevant tests have been carried out.
          ii)        All results have been gathered.
          iii)       All problems have been documented and resolved.

As each test in this document is performed, the test case on the Test Results Sheet (see Appendix A)
must be completed to indicate pass or fail. Deviations from the anticipated results should be noted in
the Test Results Comments section for each test on the sheet.

A specific test may be deemed to have failed if the result does not comply with the requirements stated
in this test specification. A pass may be recorded if after corrective action the result is compliant. The
details of the corrective action must be recorded on the Test Results Comments Sheet.
