                                                                                   (Non−Competitive)

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for the maintenance and repair of equipment and
appurtenances found in wastewater pumping stations. A subordinate Pump Station
Maintenance Worker assists in these maintenance and repair activities. The Pump Station
Maintenance Supervisor exercises general supervision over a small number of crews involved
in this kind of work. There are several distinctions between the work of this class and classes
like Wastewater Treatment Plant Maintenance Worker (Mechanical) and
(Instrumentation/Electrical) and the journey level mechanic positions which specialize in
mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation maintenance: (a) the work of this class exposes
incumbents to maintenance and repair problems which demands timely resolution because,
unlike wastewater treatment plants, there are no back−up systems in pump stations to provide
for wastewater pumping; if the stations' equipment cannot be repaired, the wastewater spills
into homes, streams or onto land; (b) the work of this class exposes incumbents to problems
involving skills and abilities applicable to mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation
troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair methods, whereas the work of the aforementioned
specialized wastewater treatment plant maintenance classes is limited to the specialty of that
class, i.e., mechanical or electrical/instrumentation maintenance and repair; (c) the work of
this class required incumbents to maintain and repair a variety of equipment not utilized in
wastewater treatment plants such as submersible and portable trash pumps, grid educators and
high velocity water cleaners, wastewater force mains and ancillary equipment, and a variety
of alarms, circuitry, and meters and controls. Therefore, the class requires well developed
skills in a range of maintenance and repair techniques applicable to specialized equipment
found only in pump stations, where no back−up systems exist thus necessitating efficient
servicing.

Although the Pump Station Maintenance Supervisor exercises general supervision over the
work, employees in this class lead a subordinate worker in carrying out assignments by seeing
assigned schedules are met, by insuring supplies and equipment are on hand to complete
assignments, and by keeping time and equipment records in the manner specified by the
supervisor. An employee in this class needs sufficient strength and agility to carry out heavy
tasks often in adverse weather, on weekends and holidays, on a rotating basis, and in
overtime. Does related work as required.
