Subject: Request to hold the demolition of Overtown properties
Dear Mr. Mar,
On Thursday February 18, 2010 the Overtown Community Oversight Board held its monthly board meeting.
At this meeting several community members requested more information about the impending demolition of
properties located at 1020-1024 NW 2nd Avenue and 163 NW 11th Street. It was stated that these buildings
may serve a historical purpose in this community. It is for this reason we write this letter. On behalf of
concerned residents, we would like your help to investigate that possibility. Overtown has a rich history. Much
of that is reflected in the unique structures that were built in a time of prosperity and development for the first
black community in Miami. One of the goals of the community is to create a sense of community through the
indigenous cultural revitalization of Overtown’s Historic, Entertainment and Business Districts. Retaining
and restoring these buildings may be one step to achieving this vision and restoring the sense of place the
residents have heard about for so many years. At this time we would request help in determining the past
historical significance of these structures and what opportunities may exist to restore these structures. We
