Arts Council helps Brett make a big bang

A Truro drummer is ready to hit the big time thanks to a new scheme from
Arts Council England, South West.

Brett Steptoe, 32, is the drummer with Truro rock band Even Nine. The
popular four-piece group, who have supported big names such as the Fun
Loving Criminals, Reef and Thunder, are about to record their first studio
album and are widely tipped for success.

But Brett almost didn’t make it to the studio after he broke one of his cymbals
during a particularly energetic set. To achieve the sound his fans love so
much for the long awaited album, he also needed new drum heads and sticks.

As a struggling musician, Brett, who valets cars by day, couldn’t afford the
£250 he needed for a new cymbal and the other equipment.

Fortunately help was at hand in the form of the Arts Council’s Take it away
scheme; an interest-free loan that can be paid back in monthly instalments.

The scheme is aimed at anyone who wants to buy a musical instrument but
can’t afford the full amount in one go. Many instruments, particularly wind and
string instruments can cost hundreds and sometimes thousands of pounds.

Brett said: ‘There was no way I could afford what I needed on the spot so
Take it away was a big help for me and for the band. We’re financing the
album ourselves so we really didn’t have the money to spend on new
equipment.’

Arts Council England, South West Executive Director Nick Capaldi said: ‘Brett
and Even Nine are a brilliant example of how Take it away can help musicians
of all ages and backgrounds.

‘There are a lot of talented people out there who are being put off learning
how to play a new instrument because of the costs involved. We’re hoping
Take it away will lessen the burden and provide more opportunities for them.’

Now Brett and the rest of the band are looking forward to recording their new
and to their UK tour in 2008.
