Lewes Bonfire Night Celebrations
Lewes, East Sussex
Lewes' famous celebrations of 1605's gunpowder plot downfall are unrivalled
across England. Its raucous parade winds through steep, cobbled streets with
colourful costumes, flaming torches and ear-splitting bangers. The smoke-
filled air is full of shouts and beating drums.
It's not just Guy Fawkes' downfall that Lewes remembers. In the previous
century Protestant martyrs were immolated outside the town's Star Inn
during the Marian Persecutions under Mary Tudor in June 1556 and 1557.
Given the localised nature of the commemorations, deeply rooted in the
Bonfire boys and girls, men and women, are divided into separate societies
sporting different costumes (up for prizes annually on the fourth Friday of
October) and occupy a different area. Some drag huge metal barrels filled
with burning tar down the hill to the River Ouse, which are ceremoniously
thrown from the bridge.
There are six different bonfire societies, and each will light its bonfire and
hold a firework display at about 21.30. There are also a number of
processions during the evening, and each bonfire society sells its own
programme giving details of its procession routes. The United grand

Winchester Round Table Bonfire & Fireworks Display
Winchester
The event features a torchlit procession from Broadway to North Walls
through the medieval centre of the town.
When the procession arrives at North Walls, the Mayor of Winchester lights
the bonfire, after which there is a spectacular fireworks display. The
Winchester Round Table Bonfire & Fireworks Display is free, but donations
are invited for the Round Table organisers, who collect for a different charity

Cranleigh Bonfire and Firework Display
Cranleigh, Surrey
Thousands of people carry flaming torches in an evening procession to the
Cranleigh bonfire site in Surrey, where the Cranleigh Lions organise the
fireworks that fill the night sky.
Families gather in Stocklund Square in the afternoon for the children's Guys
to be judged. The winning Guy leads the procession, starting in Ewhurst Rd
then proceeding up the High St to end at the Common, where the bonfire has
been built. To accompany the fireworks, bands play in Stocklund Square.

Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival
Bridgwater, Somerset
The tradition of a winter carnival in Bridgwater dates back more than 100
years and the whole town is involved in lengthy preparations throughout the
year in the hope of winning prizes for the best floats in the parade. Close to
100 floats take part.
After the parade, one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the evening
is the squibbing display. Squibbing, unique to Bridgewater, is the
simultaneous firing of lots of large fireworks (squibs) on Bridgwater High
Street to much excitement. Squibbers line the street and light their squibs all
at the same time. The effect is spectacularly bright light along the road in a
long trail of fire. Various events take place over the day between 14.00-
19.00, the procession starts at 19.00, and squibbing starts at 22.45.
