							Checklist for Insertion of Femoral Line

Explains to patient what s/he would like to do. Obtains
consent
Checks with patient re allergies – elastoplast, iodine

Positions patient correctly

Collects appropriate equipment/checks appropriate equipment
if assembled by nurse/PA
Cleans hands. Uses sterile gloves

Cleans skin around venepuncture site, drapes area.

Locates the femoral vein by palpating the femoral artery

If appropriate uses local anaesthetic at the venepuncture site

Introduces a large calibre needle attached to syringe. The
needle directed towards the patient’s head, should enter the
skin directly over the femoral vein.
Directs the needle and syringe cephalad and posteriorly,
slowly advancing the needle and gently aspirating.
When free flow of blood obtained, remove the syringe and
occlude the needle with a finger
Inserts the guidewire and removes the needle. Then inserts
vein dilator and catheter. Removes venous dilator and
connects to catheter to infusion line.
Secures line in place effectively i.e. with suture and applies a
dressing.
Tapes the tubing to patients skin

Ensures free flow of infusion fluid

Reassures patients throughout. Gives encouragement if
patient distressed.
Uses other staff appropriately.
Gives clear instructions to staff and is polite.
Cares for patients dignity e.g. does not leave exposed
unnecessarily
Able to deal with any complications/ difficulties
appropriately
