FILE: JEDA Critical TRUANCY Students who are absent from school without the knowledge and consent of their parents/guardians and the administration, or students who leave school during any session without the consent of the principal, shall be considered truant. School administrators and teachers are responsible for keeping records of student attendance. Also, the designated attendance officer for the district shall assist the administration when a student attendance problem warrants additional investigation or assistance. In cases of truancy or willful and unnecessary absence from school by a student, the following procedures will be followed under normal circumstances: Occasionally instances may occur which can only be defined as truancy or willful and unnecessary absence. Such instances must remain as disciplinary cases subject to appropriate investigation and handling by school officials. Every effort will be made to work with the parents and keep them informed in the event of such circumstances. In cases of juveniles covered under the Missouri compulsory attendance laws, notification of truancy must be made to the proper legal official. The primary goal remains the encouragement of attendance, not the punishment of absence. With this in mind, teachers, parents and students should be able to maintain and improve the educational opportunities and experiences available to all the students of the Ozark R-VI District. ******* Note: The reader is encouraged to check the index located at the beginning of this section for other pertinent policies and to review administrative procedures and/or forms for related information.
