Recent Events:
All the events mentioned in my last newsletter have taken place. In addition, on 18th Oct a new
Competition for Year 7 Gifted & talented children took place in Penwith SSP. Callington & Penryn
Partnerships will also be taking part in this competition.
Things have been really busy since the Christmas Break with the following events already having
taken place:

BE Update
Major Championships
 London awarded 2011 World Individual Championships – BADMINTON England Chief
   Executive, Adrian Christie & David Hornby, Commercial Director for Events for London, went
   to the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpar to make the final bid presentation to the Council of
   the BWF & it proved to be a winner!
 European Championships 2009/2010 – At its Council meeting in Vienna on 13th Jan,
   Badminton Europe awarded the European Championships to England with the Team event
   being in held in Liverpool in February 2009 & the Individual Championships in Manchester in
   April 2010. The bid was given a tremendous boost when UK Sport awarded BADMINTON
   England £478,300 towards the cost of staging the Team & Individual Championships.

Adrian Christie said ‘ This is great news for badminton fans throughout Britain & just what the
sport needs as we aim to raise the profile in the countdown to the London Olympics in 2012’

 Coaching Update
 UKCC Level 1
11 Candidates started the course on Saturday 19th Jan, at Fowey Leisure Centre. Kelvin
Edwards is tutoring the group, which is made up of CYB U17’s, + adults keen to support
badminton in Cornwall. All will receive 50% funding from the LNF on completion of the course.

 UKCC Level 2
The closing date for applicants onto the forthcoming ULCC L2 (starting 15th March) is 15th Feb.
Places are expected to go quickly, so please get in touch without delay is you would like more
information. Funding IS available!

Development Group
At the meeting held on November 15th our new 12 Month Development Plan was written. To see
the new plan, please visit the County Badminton Website. Trevelyan Searle from First Edition &
Dave Finney from Helston have both been welcomed onto the committee. Trev has been busy
working on restarting the Penzance Club (see below) & Dave is coaching children at Helston
School with a view to starting a new club in Helston by this Summer. Exciting stuff!

Schools Programme
    National Schools Competition: The Cornish final took place at Carn Brea Leisure Centre on
     17th January. Over 70 children took part in what was an exciting days badminton. The
     schools that made it through to the final were:

     The winning teams from each event will go forward to represent Cornwall in the Regional

     The statistics for this tournament prove what a resounding success it has been. Last year
     2 schools took part (40 children). This year an amazing 18 schools took part with 288
     children competing across the County, which is fantastic!

    Year 5 & 6 Festival County Competition – Callington SSP have completed their rounds in
     this exciting new primary Competition. Congratulations to their finalists who are as follows:

                 Tregadillett                                        St Martins School
Penwith & Penryn will hold their qualifying heats this term. The final has been booked at the
Dragon Centre, Bodmin on March 5th, 12.30 – 3pm

   Year 7 Gifted & Talented County Competition – Penwith & Penryn have completed their
    qualifying round of this new competition. Congratulations to Mounts Bay School (Penwith
    SSP) & Penryn College (Penryn SSP) who will go onto the final on Feb 7th at St Austell
    Rugby Club. Callington are due to play their round on 1st Feb at Saltash.

   Further Education County Competition – Again, this is another first in badminton
    competitions for Cornwall. Following the successful format of last years yr 10 & 11 Comp, 2
    qualifying rounds were held on 28th Nov, one at Truro College & one at Wadebridge School.
    Congratulations to the winners from each event - Truro School & Callington School. A final
    between the 2 schools is TBA in the near future.

My thanks to all concerned who have helped out at these competitions, especially the support
given by the County Competition Managers, Nicola Wright (Penwith), Gemma Wilson (Penryn),
Martin Salome (Poltair) & Rob Francis (Callington). As always, our County Chair, Jenny, has
helped at many of the events along with Paul Martin, Sue Cooper & Jon Wotton.

Club News
       Silver Clubs – Congratulations to Truro Club! Both their Senior & Junior Clubs have
        achieved Premier Club Status, & now join First Edition & Cornwall Youth Badminton.
       Satellite Clubs - All 4 new Junior Satellite Clubs, linked to CYB & funded by the Local
        Network Fund are up & running & going well. To date 66 new children taken up their
        opportunity to play badminton! For more information on the clubs which are at St
        Stephens (Brannel), Launceston, Helston & Penzance, please get in touch with me.
       Newly Affiliated Clubs – The newly established clubs of Pensilva (Near Callington) &
        The Roseland have recently affiliated to Badminton England. Thanks to Tony Poole &
        Bob Barrett for their efforts with this.
       Penryn – A new Junior club started on January 14th at Penryn College. This will run as a
        session for Primary Children, followed by a session for Secondary children & will lead on
        into a senior club. Jon Wotton will be the Club Coach. Thanks to Ros Bastion, Director of
        Sport at Penryn SSP & a member of our County Development Group for setting this up.
       New League Club for Penzance - A new club based at Penwith College is due to start
        on 10th April at Penwith College, Penzance. The club will be called ‘Penwith Badminton
        Club’. We are confident that this will be a League Playing club by September 08. My
        thanks to Trevelyan Searle who has worked tirelessly to get this moving. The club will be
        linked with the new up & running junior club, which will move from the Dome to the new
        venue at Penwith College in April.
        The junior club will run from 4.30pm – 6.30pm & the senior club will start at 6.30 pm –

GP Referral Scheme – This new Healthy Living project targeting obesity, in partnership with
L.E.A.P. (Local Exercise Action Pilot) has now started successfully at Carn Brea. Tony Poole is
the coach in charge.
