Customising the Standard Template
In some cases you might want to make changes to the look of the Standard Template.
There are several options available to you and this section of the documentation explains
how to make those changes. The three main alterations you might want to make
include:
1. Editing an icon such as a File or Folder e.g. change the description and/or
icon image;
2. Making changes to the module banner;
3. Changing the look of a page.
Change the description and/or icon of a file or folder.
To change the description and icon image of a file or folder do the following:
1. Navigate to the Build or Teach tab of the module containing the icon with the
description you want to change.
2. Click the Action Link beside the icon (this example will detail how to change
the description of a Folder). An action menu displays (Figure 1).

3. Select Edit Properties. The Edit Folder Properties screen displays (Figure

4. Make any changes to the Description field by editing or adding to the text
already present.
5. If you want to change the image that the Folder icon uses, then click the
Replace Icon button in the Custom Icon for this link section of the Edit
Folder Properties page.
6. The WebCT Content Browser displays. Navigate to the new image in your
File Store or upload one from your computer. Once you have selected it,
click OK.
7. The Edit Folder Properties screen displays again with your new icon showing.
8. Click Save. The page returns updated.
If you decide that you do not want the new icon after having changed it, then you
can repeat step 5, but this time click the Revert to Original Icon button. The
original icon will be restored.
Replicating the title banner on a different page
The page title banner that appears on the Home Page can be replicated for other Folders
to maintain the same look and feel throughout the module. The page title banner is
actually a table constructed in HTML and placed in the Header area of the page. By
editing the HTML in this table the title appearing in the banner may be changed. By
copying and pasting the HTML, the banner may be replicated on a new page, which may
then in turn be edited.
To copy a title appearing in the banner on a folder in the Standard Template, and
subsequently add it to another folder and then edit it, follow these steps:
1. Navigate to the Home Page that contains the title banner. Take care to
make sure you are in the Build tab as only a Designer can access this area.
2. Click on the Action Link to the right of the Page Options link at the top right
hand corner of the Content Frame (Figure 3).

3. Select Edit Header (Figure 4).

4. A Create or Edit Header window displays (Figure 5). Highlight all the text in
the text box and copy it, making sure you scroll all the way down to the
bottom.

5. Click the Cancel button.
6. Navigate to a page that does not have the banner. Repeat steps 2 and 3.
7. This time the Create or Edit Header text field should be blank. Paste in the
code copied from the banner on the Home Page and click Save.
8. The banner displays at the top of the page.
9. To change the text displayed in the banner, repeat steps 2 and 3.
10. In the Text area of the Create or Edit Header window, scroll down the block
of HTML code to find the current title of the page between the opening and
closing span tags (Figure 6).

11. Edit the text between these two tags, taking care not to delete any of the
angle brackets. In the example in Figure 6, the current page title banner is
“ISC9EL – eLearning for the modern academic”. Highlight the title, delete it
and type in a new one taking care not to delete any code. This is the only
line of code that needs to be edited.
12. Click Save. The page refreshes and th edited banner appears at the top of
the page.
Customising the Page Display
To make changes to the look of a page, do the following:
1. Navigate to the Build tab of the page in your module to which you want to
make changes.
2. Click on the Page Options Action Link situated at the top right hand corner
of the content page (Figure 7). An Action Menu displays.
