Church Minshull Bridge Club Newsletter – Aug 2006 A first birthday is always a special occasion and Christine already has the ‘bubbly’ ordered to make sure that Sept 12th will be no exception. Tuesday evenings should already be a permanent date in your diary, however we hope everyone will make special efforts to be with us for our first birthday celebrations. It hardly seems possible that a year has gone since the club was formed. Time then to reflect on how we things are progressing and plan for the future. During our first year we had 56 members, and an average turn-out on club evenings of 24 i.e. 6 tables. The turn-out was higher during the winter months and we believe that the autumn will bring about an increase in Tuesday evening attendances. It would be good if we could get our table numbers up to eight on a regular basis, which would probably mean recruiting another ten to 15 members, but we believe that is possible if we all took on the role of recruitment officer. Our club maxim is ‘Bridge is for fun’, but that doesn’t stop us trying to improve our bridge skills. When we reflect back twelve months and remember that a fair number of members had never seen a bidding box or playing board, we can congratulate ourselves in ‘coming a long way’. Additional to our Tuesday evening exploits a number of us have met regularly on Friday mornings at Barbara’s bridge parlour to ‘plot’ the following Tuesday’s tactics. We may not always have conquered all before us, but we have had fun trying. It is particularly pleasing that the club have been able to help a few new members learn to play bridge and they have now progressed to our Friday morning sessions. Another month or two and we hope to see them joining us on Tuesday evenings. Looking to the future then we hope that you will all try to help us get our membership up which will help us reach our objective of 8 tables regularly on Tuesday evenings. We have already announced our proposals for new classes, supervised play and topic group starting in September and details are attached. The arrangements will be dependant on the level of interest and we will be flexible to respond to the wishes of our existing members and interest expressed by potential members. Another date for your diary is September 26th 2006 when we will hold our AGM 7.00pm prompt. If members can arrive at 6.45 we can arrange the tables and Boards before the AGM that will commence at 7.00pm prompt and start Bridge not much later than normal. At the meeting members will be asked to adopt a proposed constitution and elect a committee. Nominations for the committee may be made at the meeting. Annual subscriptions become due on 1st Oct 2006. We will be proposing to the AGM that the subscription should remain at £7.00. A full set of accounts will be presented to the meeting. Remember bridge is for fun – just keep taking the tablets!
