					                 JOB DESCRIPTION – DEPUTY HEAD OF DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

JOB PURPOSE
 To teach Design & Technology in accordance with department and school policies and in pursuit of high
  standards of student achievement.
 To support the work of the Design & Technology Department and take responsibility for a key area of the
  department.

OBJECTIVES
 To raise standards of achievement in Design & Technology at all levels and across all courses.
 To foster enjoyment and satisfaction in the study of Design & Technology by students.
 To support the Head of Department in the day to day management of people, projects and resources.
 To deputise in the absence of the Head of Department.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITY AREAS
A   Deliver lessons in accordance with departmental policy.
B   Assess, record and report the development, progress and attainment of students.
C   Contribute to the evaluation and development of the curriculum in the Design & Technology
    Department.
D   Support the Head of Department and others in their work.
E   Develop self and others in order to enhance performance.

KEY TASKS
A1 Plan and prepare lessons and courses to challenge all abilities according to agreed syllabuses and
    programmes of study.
A2 Make appropriate use of available resources, including Teaching Assistants & Technicians.
A3 Create a positive learning environment and maintain good order and discipline among students in
    accordance with school policies, safeguarding their health and safety.
A4 Set homework according to department and school policy.
A5 Prepare students for public examinations.
B1 Mark students’ work regularly and keep accurate and up-to-date records of student achievement and
    progress in accordance with departmental policy.
B2 Set appropriate and challenging targets for each student based on prior attainment and standardised
    assessment data.
B3 Liaise with form tutors/Year Heads and SEN Department where appropriate.
B4 Write reports and complete reviews in accordance with school policy.
B5 Communicate and consult with parents of students as appropriate and participate in Parents’
    Consultation Evenings for this purpose.
C1 Attend department and other meetings which relate to the curriculum, the administration and
    organisation of the school or department (eg Open Evening).
C2 Contribute to the department’s stock of materials and resources for student learning.
D1 Meet regularly with the Head of Department to plan, review or report on activities.
D2 Carry out delegated tasks as agreed with the Head of Department.
D3 Recognise when support for colleagues and for the Head of Department may be needed, and offer
    appropriate help or advice.
E1 Regularly review and evaluate own teaching style and methods and training needs.
E2 Participate in the school’s Professional Development programme, including Performance Management
    reviews as directed by the Leadership Team and/or Head of Department.
E3 Participate in and, where appropriate, lead professional development activities arranged by the
    department and the school as a whole.
