ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Police Officer-Lateral Transfers are trained and experienced police professionals who can assume the full range
of policing duties after a brief orientation. Police Officers are key participants in a partnership of the City and
community to identify and resolve crime problems affecting the quality of life of all residents. The City of
Santa Ana has a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic population with a rich Hispanic heritage and a history of
support for the Police Department. This diversity and community support combine to make the Santa Ana
Police Department an exciting and demanding place to work.

CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESSFUL PERFORMERS:
Successful officers are characterized by the ability to make sound decisions which are based on fact, not
emotion, quickly and repeatedly throughout the day. They demonstrate a genuine concern for the safety of the
community, a strong sense of fairness and the ability to apply both the spirit and letter of the law within legal
parameters of discretion. They enjoy working alone or as an integral part of a team effort. Ideal candidates are
proficient in writing reports and handling paperwork and willingly work varying shifts, weekends and holidays.

REQUIREMENTS:
All applicants must meet all requirements set forth by the State of California Commission on Peace Officer
Standards and Training (POST), and possess a California POST Basic certificate. Additionally, applicants must
have completed the probationary period (and/or been employed on a permanent basis) within the past two and
one-half (2½) years as a sworn law enforcement officer in the state of California, preferably a municipality.
Eyesight must be correctable to 20/20: hard contact or glasses wearers must have an uncorrected minimum of
20/40 (no uncorrected minimum for soft contact wearers). Normal color vision. No felony convictions.
Individuals who have applied within the last six months and failed any testing component are not eligible to
reapply for a minimum of six months after the date on which they failed that component (excludes the physical
agility examination and bilingual oral fluency examination). For individuals who failed the psychological
evaluation, the waiting period for reapplying is one year.

Applicants who meet the qualifications listed above will be invited to participate in the selection process.
Please refer to the “Application Instructions for Police Officer-Lateral Transfer” for a detailed description of the
selection procedure. The process includes but is not limited to the following components:

knowledge and personal qualifications for the position.
Background Oral Interview Examination: (Weight of 50%) will evaluate the applicant's conduct and fitness
to perform as a sworn officer with the City of Santa Ana.

Applicants must receive a passing score in every component of the selection process in order to be further considered.
Applicants who are successful in all the above will be placed on an eligible list and will be considered for appointment as
vacancies occur. NOTE: Prior to selection, a thorough police background investigation will be conducted. This review
of suitability for employment will include an examination by a licensed psychologist, a polygraph examination, and a
medical examination.
