                                   The word of God

(a) Have you ever hear the saying, “I give you my word.” – it means I promise. Think
about promises for a minute. How much value to you place upon some ones
promises? Well it all depends on the moral character and integrity of the one making
the promises.

Whose promises do you trust? A politicians? A doctors? A Lawyers? A salesman?
Your husband or your wife, your children or your parents?

Written by Merril Lyn & Al Kavelin is a song made famous by the Tommy Dorsey
band and the vocalist was none other than Frank Sinatra who sang the song called, “I
give you my word.” A suitor’s ardent proclamation of undying love – I was born at
night but not last night!

I give you my word; I’ll never love again.
I give you my word; this is my first and last romance.
I gave my lips, my heart and soul to you;
My heart will break if you don’t take me too.
I give you my word, you are the only one.
All heaven has heard what your love has done.
Darling, what’s the good of life without love, or love without you,
I’ll never change, I give you my word.

N Sync also came up with a song with similar words too!

(b) God has also given us His word and it says a lot about Him. It is a revelation of his
moral fiber, His character, nature and essences.

Numbers 23:19
19 God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his
mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfil?

We understand a lot about God’s character from this comment:

   1. God is not a man – He is not like us – His nature has not been corrupted by sin
infected by viruses of unrighteousness – He is God – above us all – exalted
high above all the earth. His character is established – He is righteous and His
      word is established forever.

Psalms 138:2, “I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for
thy loving kindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all
   thy name.” KJV

   2. God does not lie – no untruth comes from His lips
   3. God does not change His mind – God is not a relativist – His counsel is not
dependent upon circumstances or situation or personalities – His mind is a
reflection of both His nature and integrity.

Preached at Norwich 21st November 2004

   4. God is some one who once He has spoken He acts – His actions are
inextricably part of His word – what He says He will do – He can not
contravene His word by opposing actions – God is not a hypocrite.
   5. Every time He promises some thing He will do it – He fulfils every promise
      He makes.

A. Think some more about God’s word:

Are you looking for something solid in life? Are you looking for some one to believe
in? Are you looking for purpose, meaning in life or a cause to live and die for?

Have you been recently disillusioned, disappointed or discouraged with your life or
service. Are you presently in a difficult situation – do you seek wise counsel or advice
– are you looking for a source of life and wisdom – look no longer – The word of God
is here and open and available to you. Still the world’s number one best seller.

Isaiah 55:10-11
10 As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without
watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower
and bread for the eater, 11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not
return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for
which I sent it.

Jeremiah 1:12
12 The LORD said to me, "You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my
word is fulfilled."

Jeremiah 23:29
29 "Is not my word like fire," declares the LORD, "and like a hammer that breaks a
rock in pieces?

Hebrews 4:12
12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it
penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts
and attitudes of the heart.

The nature and character of God is again revealed in this passage – it speaks to us of
His essence – His ability to get into the hard places of our lives – it expresses again
His omnipresence

   1. The word of God is living – it is alive – it has life of its own – it is an
extension of God – His word spoken with His own mouth permeated by His
own breath – empowered by His own Spirit – It is a descriptor of God – He is
      also alive and living!
   2. The word of God is active – marked by energetic activity – not dormant but
busy - energetic, dynamic, vigorous, lively - Energetic suggests sustained
enthusiastic activity: This is what the word of god is like – it is active – not
      passive –
   3. The word of God is sharp – always sharp – never dull – always shaper

Preached at Norwich 21st November 2004

   4. The word of God penetrates – is impact is deep – it works into the depth of
our lives – into our thoughts our hearts our emotions. It has an ability to divide
      between soul and spirit
   5. The word of God judges both thoughts and attitudes: The design of this verse
is obvious. It is to show that we cannot escape the notice of God; that all
insincerity, unbelief, hypocrisy, will be detected by him; and that since our
hearts are perfectly open before him, we should be sincere and should not
attempt to deceive him. The sense is, that the truth of God is all penetrating
and searching, and that the real thoughts and intents of the heart will be
brought to light, and that if there is insincerity and self-deception there can be
      no hope of escape.

B. God’s word is to be trusted – we can build upon it – it can become the
foundations of our very lives. It is to be our food, our sustenance, and our daily bread.

Psalms 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible and gives an incredible insight into the
power of God’s word.

Ps 119:89
Your word, O LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens.

 It is relevant – no news reporter will ever trump God with a word – His word
is forever established – it stand firm – His promises are true and reliable –
more so than any bank as His word is firm in Heaven

Ps 119:105
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

 You need insights? Go to God’s word – it will be a lamp unto your feet – it
will light your way – Are you in darkness on a subject – go to the word of God
and read – it will bring clarity and illuminate your path

Ps 119:11
11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

 To those who desire to walk upright before God – take the word of God and
hid it in your heart – allow it to be planted there – safly deposit the word of
God in the inner most recesses of your very being – you will find that you will
not sin against God – the word of God will actually cause you to live a life of
       holiness, purity and cleanness

Ps 119:9
9[Beth] How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word.

 Young men (and young women) How do you live a life pleasing to God – how
do you decide to live a life that shouts God’s fame? By living according to the
       word of God

Preached at Norwich 21st November 2004

Ps 119:16-17
16 I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word. 17 Do good to your servant,
and I will live; I will obey your word.

 You seek the goodness of God? You desire His blessings – you seek to live in
His abundance – then do this:
 Delight in His word – enjoy it, do not neglect His word – come to it often,
obey His word and you will live – truly live!

Ps 119:28
28 My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word.

 Do you have a weariness of soul? Is there sorrow of heart? Have you felt
weakened by trouble, trial, testing, is their emotional turmoil? Then come to
the word of God to be strengthened

Ps 119:114
114 You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.

 Have you felt under siege? Have you experienced the heat of battle? God is
both refuge and shield – this means there are two kinds of battles you fight –
       1. is to find refuge quick – God is our protection – 2. He is also a shield and
will protect you in the fight – but the word of God in both situations is our

We are encouraged to trust in Him

Isaiah 26:3-4
3 You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in
you. 4 Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal.

Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in
all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Matthew 7:24-28
24 "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is
like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams
rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had
its foundation on the rock.

26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is
like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams
rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his

We are encouraged to build our lives upon His word – His word is the revelation of
His will, the word of God is a reflection of His character, an expression of His nature

Preached at Norwich 21st November 2004

and an indicator of his integrity. His promises are there in His word – He is wholly
trustworthy – we can should and need to build our lives upon His word.

C. God and His word are one

John 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
Word was God.”

And the word was God – when God decided to communicate to us He didn’t send a
letter, or an Angle or even a Prophet – He sent His own Son – Jesus Christ.

John 1:4, “In him was life, and that life was the light of men.”

John 1:14, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen
his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and

God’s greatest sermon was preached through the life and death of His own son – the
Lord Jesus Messiah! Jesus came to show us what God was like –

John 14:8-10
8 Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us."

9 Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you
such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say,
'Show us the Father'? 10 Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father
is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in
me, who is doing his work.

Hebrews 1:1-3
1:1 In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in
various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he
appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. 3 The Son is the
radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things
by his powerful word.

   1. Jesus is the radiance of God’s glory
   2. The exact representation of His being
   3. The one who sustains all things – by His powerful word.

Acts 17:28, “For in him we live and move and have our being.”

Colossians 1:16-17, “16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on
earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all
things were created by him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all
things hold together.”

   (a) You can trust in Christ – you can trust in His word.

Preached at Norwich 21st November 2004

   (b) We are a people motivated by a cause – to proclaim Christ to our world
   (c) God’s greatest sermons are still being preached through you and me!

Have you received Christ – have you put your trust in Him?
