U13 Girl’s Basketball Tournament Five schools from the A10 and Hertford & Ware School Sports Partnerships came together on February 9th for the first U13 girl’s Basketball Competition held by the Partnership’s in the region. The tournament was hosted at Wodson Park Sports Centre in Ware, using the excellent basketball facilities at the venue. For many of the girls it was their first experience of competitive Basketball. However the high standard on show did not reflect this and the girl’s grew in confidence as the competition progressed. Teams were competing for the right to represent their School Sports Partnership at the county final taking place in March. There was also an added incentive for the players to perform strongly as talent scouting was taking place for the county girl’s basketball squad. Many of the girls met the required standard and will now go on to development sessions with the county squad. Right from the off there was plenty of action, with Simon Balle setting the standard for the rest of the competition scoring an excellent 30 points in their first 10 minute game. The competition soon turned into a three horse race between Turnford, Presdales and Simon Balle. The teams were so tightly grouped that 2 of the matches between the teams finished in a draw and the other was decided by only 1 point. In the end Simon Balle were triumphant with 3 wins and 1 draw closely finished by the also undefeated Turnford. Both Simon Balle and Turnford will now go on to the county final representing the Hertford & Ware and A10 SSP’s respectively. Based on their performances during this competition I am sure both teams will be very successful in the next stage of the competition. A special mention must go to the students of Richard Hale, Chauncy, and Turnford who refereed and scored the games in a very professional way and ensured the players had an enjoyable competition.
