Children need to be confident using arrows to show size and
direction of force.

The size of force is shown through the length of the arrow and
not its thickness.

The origin of the arrow should originate from the object itself
e.g. showing the two forces of gravity and air resistance acting
on a parachute.

                                                                  air resistance

                                                                  gravity

Children also need to think what end results of a force is – this
will help them to decide which is the size of force e.g. on the
parachute gravity is greater than air resistance as the
parachute continues to descend even when the parachute is
fully opened.

Complete the following force diagrams showing size and
direction of force.

                                                       gravity
gravity thrust (from engine)
up thrust (from rocket engine) air resistance
