Since God has loved us so much, we too should love one another. From the first Letter of St. John. Sixth Sunday of the Year “Give us this day our daily Bread” It is sometimes said that the Irish people have a particular understanding of the absolute devastation caused by hunger. Perhaps deep in our collective psyche we can understand, because of our own famine in the 19th century, the catastrophic effect of hunger on individuals, families, communities and entire countries. Hunger is the most extreme form of poverty, where individuals or families cannot afford to meet their most basic need for food. When a family in a developing country cannot grow enough food or earn enough money to buy food, there is often nowhere to turn for help. Undernourishment negatively affects people’s health, productivity, sense of hope and overall well-being. A chronic lack of food can stunt growth, slow thinking and sap energy. The constant securing of food consumes valuable time and energy allowing less time for work and earning an income. Socially the lack of food erodes relationships and feeds shame so those most in need of support are often least able to call on it. This in turn leads to a tremendous loss of dignity. It is for these stark reasons that hunger forms the focus of the Trócaire Lenten Campaign 2010. Please help and donate generously through your parish this year. Masses this Week: 9.30am Tuesday.
