                                                                                                      Sixth Sunday of the Year
                                                                                         “Give us this day our daily Bread”
                                                                                         It is sometimes said that the Irish people have a particular understanding of the
                                                                                         absolute devastation caused by hunger. Perhaps deep in our collective psyche we
                                                                                         can understand, because of our own famine in the 19th century, the catastrophic
                                                                                         effect of hunger on individuals, families, communities and entire countries.

                                                                                         Hunger is the most extreme form of poverty, where individuals or families cannot
                                                                                         afford to meet their most basic need for food. When a family in a developing
                                                                                         country cannot grow enough food or earn enough money to buy food, there is often
                                                                                         nowhere to turn for help. Undernourishment negatively affects people’s health,
                                                                                         productivity, sense of hope and overall well-being. A chronic lack of food can stunt
                                                                                         growth, slow thinking and sap energy. The constant securing of food consumes
                                                                                         valuable time and energy allowing less time for work and earning an income.
                                                                                         Socially the lack of food erodes relationships and feeds shame so those most in need
                                                                                         of support are often least able to call on it. This in turn leads to a tremendous loss
                                                                                         of dignity.

                                                                                         It is for these stark reasons that hunger forms the focus of the Trócaire Lenten
                                                                                         Campaign 2010. Please help and donate generously through your parish this year.

Almsgiving is an integral part of our Lenten Journey. It is part of a three-fold expression
(fasting, almsgiving and prayer) of our desire to be spiritually renewed for Easter.
                                                                                              40 Days for Life Lenten Campaign. Precious Life is encouraging parishioners
Perhaps this Lent might be an opportunity for us as adult Christians to re-connect with the
                                                                                              across Northern Ireland to unite with those in USA, Canada and Australia for a 40
richness of this three-fold tradition as we journey together as a parish towards the joy of
                                                                                              day campaign to end abortion. The mission of the campaign is to bring together the
                                                                                              body of Christ in a spirit of unity during a focused 40 days of prayer, fasting and
