Revised February 6, 2009 Page 2
Books to bring:
Participants must bring REWARDS and REWARDS Writing Teacher’s Guides, Student
Books, and the REWARDS Writing Word Choice Help Book with you. If you do not own
copies with covers that match those on the first page, see the Sopris West web site
(www.sopriswest.com) for ordering, or, on the registration form, let us know that you
would like to pay for books along with your registration fee and pick them up during the
TOT check-in. If you are attending the REWARDS Plus TOT, you do not need to bring
books. We will provide lessons and train on both Plus programs.

Confirmation Letter:
A confirmation letter will be sent to each participant at the address that you or your
school district provides. Whenever possible, please provide a home address rather than
the school address in the event that school is closed for the summer before you receive
your confirmation letter. Please contact us if you do not receive your confirmation letter.

Travel and Lodging:
Travel and lodging are the responsibility of the participant. A small number of rooms are
available at the guaranteed rate, so you will want to make your reservation as soon as
possible. See attached information.

Cancellation Policy:
We highly encourage substitutions rather than cancellations. If you must cancel, please
submit written notification via fax or mail by the evening one week prior to the first day of
the workshop series (e.g. by 9 p.m. PDT Wednesday if series begins on a Wednesday). If notification is
received a week prior, participants will receive a refund, less a $50 cancellation fee per
person per day for REWARDS and/or REWARDS Plus, and less a $20 cancellation fee
for REWARDS Writing. The cancellation fee pays for training materials already
prepared for that person. Refunds will not be given for cancellations made fewer than
seven days before the training date; however, the registration fee may be applied to a
future TOT.

Introduction to REWARDS Writing

What is REWARDS Writing: Sentence Refinement?

REWARDS Writing is a multi-module writing program for intermediate and secondary
students. Sentence Refinement is the first module of that research-based program and
is consistent with the recommendations in Writing Next (Graham & Perin, 2007).

Sentence Refinement is a supplementary set of 75 mini-lessons (20 to 30 minutes a
day) designed to assist students in: 1) selecting more precise, interesting words for their
compositions (word choice); 2) improving the quality, sophistication, and variety of their
sentences (often referred to as sentence fluency); and 3) editing the sentences within
their compositions. This module is often used as an entry activity at the beginning of a
language arts or writing class.

Why is this module important?

When the written products of intermediate students or struggling secondary writers are
examined, challenges at the sentence level are often noted, as seen in this paragraph
that typifies a sixth grader. (Note: Spelling errors have been corrected).

My father and I wanted to go fishing. We went to the campgrounds. We put up a
tent. We put out our sleeping bags. We set up a camp kitchen. Then we went fishing.
We fished everyday. I caught 11 trout. My father caught 24 trout. It was a good trip.

The paragraph has the basic paragraph structure of a topic sentence and related
sentences. However, there is little variation in sentence length or complexity, a good
deal of repetition, and limited word choice. Using the skills learned in Sentence
Refinement, the following type of paragraph might emerge:

For several years, my father and I had dreamed of fishing together. In August, we
traveled to the Cascade Mountains to fulfill our dream. My father reserved a campsite at
a beautiful, secluded lake. When we arrived at our spot, we quickly assembled a small
pup tent, spread out our warm down sleeping bags, and fashioned a temporary outdoor
kitchen. When we finished creating our camp, we headed for the lake with our sturdy
fishing poles. By the end of the week, I caught 11 humongous trout by using
marshmallows for bait. My father is an experienced fisherman, so he caught 24 trout
that week. The highlights of the trip were spending a whole week in the mountains with
my father and catching my first trout.

In the edited paragraph, more care was taken in word choice, additional information was
added to the paragraph, and sentences were combined, resulting in more sophisticated
sentences. All of these elements add to the richness of the edited paragraph.

Revised February 6, 2009 Page 8
What are the goals of Sentence Refinement?

The module consists of three major strands: 1) Sharpening Your Word Choices, 2)
Polishing Your Sentences, and 3) Editing Your Paragraph. The goals for each strand
are that students will:

♦ Sharpening Your Word Choices: Select more precise words, move away from
overused words, and match subjects and verbs.

♦ Polishing Your Sentences: Polish sentences by combining ideas into one sentence
or by expanding sentences through questions such as when, where, why, and how.

♦ Editing your Paragraph: Edit paragraphs by combining ideas; omitting unnecessary
words or sentences; replacing overused words, less precise words, or grammatically
incorrect words; and by expanding sentences through questions such as when,
