                      LOST CHILD POLICY & PROCEDURE

Willows Centre for Children has very detailed procedures for Child Safety.
Risk assessments are carried out, staff are trained and regulations are followed.
However it is necessary to have a procedure in place in the unlikely event of a
lost child.

From the Centre:
   1. The member of staff who discovers the apparent missing child will alert
the rest of that team and Office who will alert all other adults in the Centre,
especially the most senior member of staff. The search will take
      precedence over all other activities

   2. All inside and outside areas will be thoroughly searched, including
cupboards, toilets and sheds, ensuring all gates are still secured.

   3. If the child has actually escaped the police will be called on 999.

Go to section labeled Police involvement.

From a Trip:
   1. On any trip there must be an adult holding a child’s hand or the child will
be in a pushchair or on reins.

   2. If a child manages to run off the member of staff responsible will give their
      other child to the group.

   3. The group will remain calm, reassure the children and return to the
      vehicle.

   4. The member of staff will pursue the child whilst in sight.

   5. If they lose sight of the child they will use their mobile phone to contact the
Police – 999 and to inform the group leader who will contact staff at the
      Willow.

   6. If in an area with their own security systems (e.g a shopping centre) alert
      them to the loss.

   7. Centre staff will contact the parents.

Police involvement and following procedures:

   1. As soon as the police arrive a member of staff will liaise with them to
      assist with their search.

   2. Staff will ensure other children are kept safe and reassured and if offsite
return to the Willows leaving one member with details to liaise with the
      Police.

   3. The Centre staff will contact the Parents an inform them of the situation
      and outcome.

   4. The Centre staff will contact the Hampshire Outdoor Advisory team on
01962 846547 or 01962 846543. The caller should say “This is the
Hampshire Education Department requesting the emergency co-
ordination service…and give this service the details of the event….”

   5. Involved staff will write a report, signed and dated. A copy of this will be
sent to the parents, Ofsted, the LA, the Chair of Governors and filed. A
report will be made to the Governing Body.

   6. Ongoing risk assessments will be carried out and an immediate review
would take place after the incident.

Success Criteria:
 Children partaking in any Centre service will remain safe and
            secure.
 Escaping children will be recovered quickly and easily.
 It will not be necessary to call the Police.
 Police will find our staff helpful and cooperative in a difficult
            situation.
 Risk assessments will prevent child loss on/off site.
