       The 5 Paragraph Essay is a structured approach to formal writing. Most
students do not like to write because they do not understand how to write. By
teaching the basic steps of the 5 paragraph essay, the students will learn how to
construct and clear, coherent piece of writing.

                      The Five Paragraph Essay Format

Paragraph 1:        Introduction / Thesis
      * In paragraph 1, you are to give a broad introduction to let the reader
      know what the essay is going to discuss.
      * Your thesis statement should list what you will write about in paragraphs
      2, 3, and 4.
          Ex. – Spring is my favorite season because of the things I hear, see,
          and smell.
          Paragraph 2 will discuss the things I hear.
          Paragraph 3 will discuss the things I see.
          Paragraph 4 will discuss the things smell.

Paragraph 2, 3, and 4:      Detail Paragraphs
      * You will write a detailed paragraph for each item listed in your thesis
      statement.
      * Your items should come in the same order for both your paragraphs and
      thesis statement.

Paragraph 5: Conclusion / Ending
      * Give a wrap up of the essay.
      * Restate your thesis statement.
      * Give the essay some closure.


                                     Be Careful!

      *** Do NOT write the entire essay in ONE paragraph.
      *** Be SURE to address each item listed in your thesis.
      *** Keep it Simple, yet BE INTERESTING!
      *** Remember, writing is a way to express your feelings,
thoughts, and opinions. Always DO YOUR BEST whenever you write
anything.
