NEW ZEALAND DARTS COUNCIL INC P. O. Box 907, Palmerston North Ph: 06 353 8180 or Fax 06 3538182 Mobile 0274 495 744 Email: nzdarts@xtra.co.nz Oct. 2006 Monthly Newsletter “World Class Performance” From Reporter in the field – Ken Wilson Inside this Issue World class that's all you could describe the Men's Singles Final as, at the Allan King Memorial between South Otago's Dave Keating and Southland's Warren Parry in the “best of nine final” Dave took the win 5 legs to 1 with an average of 30.58. It was all over in 97 darts 5-1 to Dave - he had 34 trips to the board hitting 100 or more 17 of those times. What a great final - the best I think I have ever seen. The ladies final was played between Auckland’s Valona Hereora and Portsides Piki Morrison. Piki took the first two legs, and then Valona evened it up taking the next two. Piki got leg 5 while Valona took the lead winning legs 6 & 7. Piki again squared it with a win in the 8 th leg so it came down to the decider. In a nail biting finish both players scored shot for shot but it was Valona who got the glory winning 5 – 4. With this win along with her 2nd placing in the “Auckland Open” Valona moves up the ranking list to 6th place and Piki advances to 3rd place behind front runners Rachel Padget and Jannette Jonathan. There is only one more ranking tournament left to play this year – “The Levin Open” – 19th November • Alan King Memorial Tournament • Under 24’s Results • Latest NZDC Rankings • Asia Pacific Cup Results • NZ Trophy Match Results Highlights: Alan King Winners NZ Under 24’s NZDC Rankings AP Cup Results Tournament Results NZDC Trophy Results 1 1 2 2 3 3 Puma NZ Under 24’s Championships There was a large turn out for this year’s Puma NZ Under 24’s Championships held at the Wellington Darts Association on the 30th Sept & 1st Oct. The ladies section saw a round robin played to find the eventual winners Mavai Mataiti & Naeru Watene – Auckland (8 wins) and Runners Up Metua Matangi (Tokoroa) & Hayley Morgan (Te Awamutu) (7 Wins). In the singles events both finals were a Capital vs Auckland affair with Lewis Temarama (Kapi Mana) coming out the winner over Tara-ariki Pitomaki 3 zip and Mary Anne Teinaki (Kapi Mana) beating Naeru Watene 3-1. This was Herbie first NZ Tournament win in 2 years, since topping the Ranking Tables in 2004. He didn’t have it all his own way though as his opponent Aucklander “John Sinclair” led off by taking the first 2 legs in the best of 7 final. Herbie got a lucky break and got his first finish in leg 3, John took the next leg “throwing a 180 to start off” to give him a 3 – 1 lead. The crowd could have been forgiven for thinking Sinclair had the match sewn up in leg 5 with him again starting with a 180 but Herbie wasn’t prepared to lie down for him and with some excellent replies took the leg with a 40 finish. He then grabbed leg 6 with an 80 peg to square up the match 3 all. Herbie won the toss for the final leg and started with a 137, John replied with 131 and Herbie followed it with a 140. Sinclair then dropped a shot enabling Herbie to secure the lead and win the match in 14 darts. The Ladies final was an all Auckland match up with Peggy Speir and Valona Hereora facing off and was just as exciting as the Men’s. At one stage it looked like being tied up at 3 all but Valona missed a crucial finish enabling Peggy to get the win 4 - 2. All in all this was an excellent first Ranking Tournament for Auckland and West City Darts Committee and all their helpers deserve a well earned pat on the back for all their efforts including arranging for guest speakers “MP” Chris Carter and Auckland City Councilor Linda Cooper to Open the tournament. The event which was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 18 th to 21st September attracted teams from 10 Counties, Brunei, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines and Singapore. In the men’s Singles all four men qualified but unfortunately were all drawn into the same side of the Knock out draw. Graeme Mc Elroy fell to L.G. IIagan of the Philippines at the last 16, Robert Grant lost to Team mate Warren Parry in the Quarter final. Parry then had to play his other team mate Bernie Smith in the Semi finals winning 3 -1 and progressing to the final against Amin Ghani (Malaysia). It was a very close fought final and despite throwing an 11 dart leg Parry narrowly lost 4 legs to 3. Jannette Jonathan and Megan Smith dominated the Ladies competition winning the Pairs event over Callie Teoh & Alice Koh (Singapore) and then Smith taking out the Singles Title 4 zip over Iran’s Sahar Zohouri. The overall combined results saw the Black Flights once again become the “Asia Pacific Cup Champions” with 242 points, followed by the Philippines (196), Japan (178), and host country Malaysia (168) The next Asia Pacific Cup will be hosted by New Zealand in Palmerston North Sept/Oct 2008 NEED TO KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT DARTS? Out and About Over the last month I have had the pleasure of meeting two of NZ Darts Old stalwarts “Bill Rose” and “Tony Franklin” I met Bill Rose at the Inaugural Auckland Open. He had dusted off his darts especially for the tournament to show his support for West City. Tony Franklin attended Manawatu’s 50th Anniversary Dinner, as a past Secretary of the Association and ofcourse he is also a life member of the NZDC. I found both of them to be great characters and enjoyed listening to their accounts of our sport in “the old days” and I look forward to hopefully meeting them again sometime soon.
