Intersil Completes 600-Volt Switching Mode Power Supply IGBT Family Targeting
                             Offline Power Conversion
-- Switches up to 40 amps at 100kHz
-- IGBT offers alternative to conventional MOSFET technology

PALM BAY, FL, March 15, 2000 -- Intersil Corporation today introduced the newest device in its
family of switch mode power supply (SMPS) series IGBTs to address the 24 X 7 power management
demands of today’s Internet infrastructure. The advanced SMPS 600V family of insulated gate bipolar
transistors (IGBTs) is the first to offer high frequency offline power conversion for applications of
100 kilohertz (kHz) and greater. The device delivers high current density capability resulting in increased
power supply power density for SMPS AC/DC, high voltage DC/DC, power factor correction (PFC)
stages and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) applications.

Intersil’s SMPS IGBT devices are MOS gated, high voltage switching devices combining the best
features of MOSFETs and bipolar transistors. The devices deliver the high input impedance of a
MOSFET and the low on state conduction loss of a bipolar transistor. The family is designed for high
voltage switching applications where operating frequencies are high and where low switching and
conduction losses are essential.

Intersil’s SMPS family IGBT devices function as alternatives to power MOSFETs in high frequency,
switchmode power converters. The devices deliver lower gate charge in comparison with MOSFETs,
lowering peak current drive requirements. A single SMPS IGBT from Intersil can replace as many as
three high voltage MOSFETs. Up to one-fifth the size of a comparable MOSFET solution, an SMPS
IGBT solution reduces board space and component count. When employing Intersil’s 600V SMPS
IGBTs, designers can improve system efficiency while reducing costs.
